Alfred Morris CASSIDY, b. 1896, Edenhope, Victoria, son of Edwin CASSIDY and Ann SHAW. Hairdresser and Apprentice printer in Portland. WW1 Pte 860, 24th Battalion, AIF enlisted 25 Mar 1915, embarked for overseas service 8 May 1915 on the "Euripides". He died from heat stroke on the troop transport in the Red Sea on 29 May 1915 and was buried at sea. Named on the Casterton War Memorial, Casterton Town Hall Honour Roll, Dergholm & District Soldiers' Memorial Hall Honour Roll, Dergholm Recreational Reserve Memorial Plaque & Tree.

Albert Thomas DONEHUE, b. 1885, Casterton, Victoria, son of Sterne DONOHUE and Annabella Louisa McKenzie FARLEY. WW1 service with the 2nd Battalion, Cantebury Regiment, New Zealand Forces. He was killed in action at Passchendael, Belgium on 12 Oct 1917. Named on the Dergholm & District Soldiers' Memorial Hall Honour Roll, Dergholm Recreational Reserve Memorial Plaque & Tree.

FOSTER, W.

Appears to be William FOSTER, b. 1890, Dergholm, Victoria, son of Jonas FOSTER and Susan ASTBURY who (after WW1) married Amy Florence NICHOLLS from Sandford. WW1 Sgt 1471, served with the 4th Light Horse Regiment, AIF, Australian Cyclist Corps, Australian Mount Division Train in the Middle East. He enlisted Melbourne, 2 Mar 1915, embarked for overseas service on 29 Oct 1915 and RTA 10 Jul 1919. Named on the Dergholm & District Soldiers' Memorial Hall Honour Roll. William FOSTER died in Casterton in 1972.

GULL, R. S.

Russell Sawyer GULL [MM], b. 1889, Poolaijelo, Victoria, son of Martin GULL & Mary Ethel HALE who (after WW1) married Annie Elizabeth McNAMARA also from Poolaijelo, daughter of Michael McNAMARA and Eliza JONES. WW1 L/Cpl 464, served with the 39th Battalion, AIF, in France. He enlisted at Hamilton, 10 Apr 1916, Russell was awarded the Military Medal for bravery under shellfire in 1918. He RTA 20 Aug 1919. Named on the Dergholm & District Soldiers' Memorial Hall Honour Roll, Casterton Town Hall Honour Roll, Tree 85 in the Digby WW1 Avenue of Honour. Russell GULL died and was buried in the Dergholm Cemetery in 1953.

Appears to be William JONES, b. 1874, Dergholm, Victoria, son of Henry "Harry" JONES and Jane HOLT who are buried in the Dergholm Cemetery. William was a miner in Coolgardie, WA and had a wife Annie prior to enlistment in WW1 in 1916. WW1 Pte 4149, 28th Battalion, AIF, enlisted Blackboy Hill, Western Australia, 4 Jan 1916, embarked for overseas service on 1 Apr 1916 per "Ulysses" from Fremantle, WA. He served on the Western Front and RTA 19 Oct 1918. Named on the Dergholm & District Soldiers' Memorial Hall Honour Roll. William JONES appears to have died in Casterton in 1925.

Donald Stanley MATHESON, b. 1897, Mount Gambier, S-E South Australia, son of Donald MATHESON and Flora Annie McEACHERN from Dartmoor, Edenhope & Melbourne. WW1 Spr 20454, 3rd Division Signal Company, AIF, enlisted Melbourne, Victoria, 25 Sep 1916, embarked for overseas service on 21 Nov 1917 per "Nestor" from Melbourne. He served on the Western Front and RTA 12 Jun 1919. Named on the Dergholm & District Soldiers' Memorial Hall Honour Roll and the Casterton Town Hall Honour Roll.

MATHESON, P. H.

Percy Hugh Albert MATHESON, b. 1891, Nelson, near Dartmoor, S-W Victoria, son of Donald MATHESON and Flora Annie McEACHERN from Dartmoor, Edenhope & Melbourne. WW1 Pte 4749, 22nd Battalion, AIF, enlisted Melbourne, Victoria, 7 Feb 1916. He embarked for overseas service on 4 Apr 1916 per "Euripides" from Melbourne, served on the Western Front and was wounded in action on at least two occasions. He RTA 8 Aug 1918 and is named on the Dergholm & District Soldiers' Memorial Hall Honour Roll and the Casterton Town Hall Honour Roll. Percy married Euphemia Grace HOPE from Edenhope in 1919 and died in 1973.

McNAMARA, C. R.

Charles Richard McNAMARA [MM], b. 1889, Dergholm, Victoria, son of Michael McNAMARA & Annie Elizabeth BOWDEN and attended school at Poolaijelo. WW1 served as Pte 3185, 23rd Battalion, AIF, and Driver 3185, 14th Field Artillery Brigade, AIF in France. He enlisted at Melbourne, 13 Jul 1915, and embarked for overseas service on the "Commonwealth" on 26 Nov 1915. Charles was awarded the Military Medal for bravery following a recommendation in 1918. He RTA on 15 May 1919. Named on the Dergholm & District Soldiers' Memorial Hall Honour Roll, Casterton Town Hall Honour Roll. Charles McNAMARA died and was buried in the Dergholm Cemetery in 1957.

Gilbert Ivan Clifton ROBERTSON, b. 1895, Edenhope, Victoria, son of Francis "Frank" ROBERTSON and Charlotte SMITH, attended school at Poolaijelo. WW1 Pte 1563, 27th Battalion, AIF enlisted 16 Mar 1915 at Mount Gambier, embarked for overseas service from Adelaide 31 May 1915 on the "Geelong". He died from meningitis at Heliopolis, Egypt 13 Jul 1915 and was buried at the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt. Named on the Casterton War Memorial, Casterton Town Hall Honour Roll, Dergholm & District Soldiers' Memorial Hall Honour Roll, Dergholm Recreational Reserve Memorial Plaque & Tree.

ROPER, A. McL.

Alexander McLeod ROPER, b. 1882, Dergholm, Victoria, son of William Henry ROPER & Sarah Maria Christina CHASTON and was a Grazier from Dergholm when he enlisted in the AIF. He enlisted at Broadmeadows, 21 Aug 1914, and embarked for overseas service on the "Wiltshire" on 19 Oct 1914. In WW1 he served as L/Cpl 178, 4th Light Horse Regiment, AIF and the ANZAC Cyclists Corps. He RTA 20 Aug 1917 after problems with his eyesight. Named on the Dergholm & District Soldiers' Memorial Hall Honour Roll and the Casterton Town Hall Honour Roll. Alexander ROPER later married Clarice Ada Crossley RANKIN and he died and was buried in the Dergholm Cemetery in 1978.

ROPER, E. G.

Ernest George ROPER, b. 1887, Dergholm, Victoria, son of William Henry ROPER & Sarah Maria Christina CHASTON and was a Carpenter from Melbourne when he enlisted in the AIF. He enlisted at Broadmeadows, 12 Jan 1916, and embarked for overseas service on the "Uganda" on 2 May 1916. In WW1 he served as Pte 2319, 8th Light Horse Regiment, AIF. He RTA 17 Jul 1917 from the Middle East due to illness. Named on the Dergholm & District Soldiers' Memorial Hall Honour Roll and the Casterton Town Hall Honour Roll. Ernest ROPER died and was buried in the Casterton Cemetery in 1958.

SIMSON, E. C. P.

Charles Eric Playfair SIMSON, b. 1892, Casterton, Victoria, son of Charles SIMSON & Catherine OWENS, married Ada Gladys HALL in 1915 and was noted as a Farmer of Roseneath when he enlisted in the AIF in 1915. He enlisted at Melbourne on 20 Jul 1915, and embarked for overseas service on the "Wiltshire" on 18 Nov 1915. In WW1 he served as Driver 6528, 11th Battery, 4th Artillery Brigade, AIF and was wounded in action in France in 1917. He RTA 13 Feb 1918 from the Western Front. Named on the Dergholm & District Soldiers' Memorial Hall Honour Roll and the Casterton Town Hall Honour Roll and he died and was buried in the Casterton Cemetery in 1948.

TYLER, T.

Appears to be John TYLER [MM], also known as Patrick TYLER, who was born at Dergholm in 1899 to Mary Jane TYLER and was raised by his grandfather William TYLER, farmer of Dergholm. He was recorded as a labourer, aged 18y, from Dergholm when he enlisted in the AIF at Casterton on 20 Mar 1917, with the permission of his grandfather, and embarked for overseas service on the "Suevic" on 21 Jun 1917. In WW1 he served as Pte 4895, 38th Battalion, AIF in France. He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery under fire on 30 Jun 1918 and RTA 2 Jun 1919. John was living at Nariel, Via Cudgewa (nr Corryong), Victoria, in 1940. Where was he after 1940?
