After the cessation of World War I hostilities, the Federal Government of the day donated spoils of war to various communities of country towns.

Casterton community received a German Howitzer Cannon. For many years this cannon was located in the town, but eventually it disappeared.

Recently the cannon, in a dilapidated state, was located on a farm in the district and returned to the Casterton Historical Society for the Community Museum. Restoration had been done on the framework to the stage where it was ready for sandblasting and painting and the original, collapsed steel tyred wooden wheels had been fully restored by members of the Historical and Community Museum who then applied for a Dept of Veterans Affairs “Salute Their Service” Commemoration grant to cover the quote for the sandblasting and painting.

The Historical Society was successful in obtaining the DVA grant to complete the restoration of sandblasting and painting. Keppel Prince of Portland has how completed this work and the canon returned to Casterton.

The Cannon will now be sited at the Railway complex and with help from the Casterton Rotary members it will be placed under a shelter.
