On Tuesday last, death claimed as of one its victims, Mr. G. R. JOHNSTONE, father of Mr. Alex JOHNSTONE, of Edenhope. Deceased was 75 years of age and ill for a long time, death had been expected for many days, but on Tuesday morning he seemed fairly well and Mr. A. JOHNSTONE and his son went away to work only to be called back to the bedside to see him pass away. The remains were interred at Edenhope Cemetery on Wednesday and were followed by a large number. The Rev. S. McMEEKS read the service at the grave and Mr. J. MOORE had charge of the mortuary arrangements. Mr. JOHNSTONE who was born near Hamilton, Scotland 1829 spent several years in band of 90th Regiment of light infantry and left just before the Crimea. In 1854 he came to Victoria landed at Portland and travelled inland to "Newlands" Apsley. Here he was married and lived on the border of Mundara and Lake Wallace South stations. His only son, Mr. Alex JOHNSTONE was the first white child washed in Lake Wallace. In 1870 Mr. JOHNSTONE went home where he spent 12 months afterwards coming back to Newlands Station where he became an overseer. Here he stayed until last July when illness caused him to take up abode with his son in Edenhope in whose residence he died.
