Greenwald Avenue of Honour

Memorial Avenue.

An avenue, in memory of soldiers from Greenwald and surrounding districts, was planted along the main road in front of the Greenwald State School on August 22.

Although weather conditions were unfavourable for out of door functions, a large number of residents from the district was present to witness the planting of the trees (pinus insignis) which were the gift of Mr. Muir of Bolwarra. The ceremony opened with the National Anthem, followed by addresses from Mr. R. H. M'Kee and Rev. M'Lean of Heywood. While the trees were being planted a brief life history of each soldier was read by the former speaker. After the planting was completed, afternoon tea, which was much appreciated after the cold afternoon, was provided by the ladies. The preparatory work, which consisted of clearing a heavily timbered space of ground twelve chains long, constructing of tree guards and the making of name plates which were attached to the guard of each tree, was carried out by working "bees" representing residents from Greenwald and Lyons.
