William & Margaret SWAN arrived in the Port Phillip District (Victoria) on the "Palmyra" in 1839. William was employed as a shepherd by Niel BLACK, a squatter of "Glenormiston" station, located near the later settlements of Norat and Mortlake. They remained at "Glenormiston" until 1849 and during this time their first 5 children were born.

After the death of his wife, Margaret, at their "Konongwootong" station, Coleraine, William SWAN went for a trip back to Scotland in 1868 along with his niece Catherine McCARTHUR, daughter of his late wife's sister Isabella McARTHUR (nee McMURRICH). William SWAN died near Loch Lomond, Argyllshire, Scotland in 1869.
