AMOS : James AMOS c.1804-1843, aged 40, former whaler at Portland Bay, servant of Mr HENTY was at "Muntham Station" in the 1843. He was a bullock dray driver, employed by Mr John HENTY, run over by a dray wheel when taking a load of wool to Portland Bay. Accident happened in March 1843, at "The Heath" near Fitzroy (or Second) River (now Heywood), Port Phillip District, Colony Of New South Wales.
ANDISON : Simon ANDISON 1831-1898, farmer of Carapook, put his signature to the 1875 Carapook School petition which showed 1 school-aged child & living 2 miles SW of Carapook. Simon is the son of James ANDISON and Jean JACKSON from Sandford and his name later changes to ANDERSON. Simon married Mary McKAY (1833-1920) at Sandford in 1865. No children located. Simon paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £27.
ANDISON : William ANDISON 1848-1898, appears to be a brother of Simon above from the Sandford area. William married Isabella MURPHY in 1876 and he paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £107.
ANDREW : Stewart ANDREW 1830-1909, b. Glasgow, Scotland to Hugh ANDREW and Jean BLAIR, d. Moss Vale, NSW. Stewart was unmarried, had a Carapook property fronting the Wannon river named "River Farm" from 1864-74 where a Clydesdale stallion named "Champion" was burnt to death in a stable fire in January 1869. He sold his 104 acre property in 1874 and went to Hay, NSW where his brother John ANDREW was a newspaper proprietor, and where he farmed for many years.
ANDREWS : Elias ANDREWS 1819-1893, worked at "Muntham Station" in the 1850s. He married Eliza DAVY in Essex, England in 1850 and had the following family - Daniel, Sarah, Mary Ann, Charles, James, Peter, Hannah, John & Elijah.
ANSON : Leslie "Les" ANSON 1898-1981, son of Joseph ANSON and Margaet McNICOL was married to Alice May POVEY (1900-1970) and was a contractor and farmer of "Obanvale," Carapook.
ARDEN : Alfred ARDEN 1853-1929, b. "Hilgay" station, Coleraine to Alfred ARDEN and Margaret FULTON; farmer of Tahara, Victoria and "Rosebank" Carapook (1898-1903), farm damaged in the Carapook fire of 1900; d. Hamilton, Victoria; married 1898 to to Annie Theresa AYLMER 1871-1921, b. Merino, Victoria to Patrick AYLMER and Margaret FLEMING; d. Coleraine, Victoria..
ASTBURY : William Brennan ASTBURY 1856-1937, had family members who lived at Carapook in the early 1900's. His son Thomas and family and widow Beatrice WYNNIAT were residents in the village of Carapook for many years.
AUBREY : Henry AUBREY abt.1830-aft.1868, was appointed in 1868 as a School Committee Member for the Bruk Bruk School Committee. [No other information ??]
BAILEY : George Elias BAILEY c.1854-1929, b. Portland, S-W Victoria to Gracious BAILEY and Caroline PITTS, d. Goroke, Victoria. He married Hannah Maria MARSH 1855-1908 in 1878 and had the following family - George Elias, Charles Arthur, Mary Maria, Thomas John, William Edward, Robert Harold & Evelyn Amy. A daughter Mary Maria BAILEY, b. 1885 Carapook m. Frederick Clifford PENNY in 1907.
BALLANTYNE : Robert BALLANTYNE c.1811-1856, born Roxburghshire, Scotland, left a mare for breeding, at Edward HENTY's "Muntham" Station in 1852 and had failed to collect it by 1858. He was a squatter of "Newlands" Station, near Apsley, S-W Victoria from 1845-1851, and appears to have died in Victoria in 1856.
BEALE : Henry BEALE c.1819-..?.., born London, England was married in 1853 at "Muntham" Station to Margaret BOWLES, b. 1828 Co Cavan, Ireland and they had the following known family - Henry James, John, Sarah, Elizabeth, William & Reuben, and then the family...?...
BELLINGER : John BELLINGER 1830-1901, a farmer of Bruk Bruk, had a signature on the 1875 Carapook School petition showing 2 school-aged children, living 1 mile NE of Carapook. John BELLINGER of Herefordshire, England married Mary Ann COUSINS in 1870 and had the following family - Samuel Edward James, Frederick Charles, Sarah Ann, Harriet Elizabeth Jane. The family moved north to the Goroke & Horsham area.
BENDALL : Albert Leonard Bertram BENDALL 1898- ? , born Southanpton, England came to Australia aged 13 in 1911. He enlisted in WW1 in 1916 when employed as a farm hand by Mr J. STARK of Carapook. His name is on the Carapook WW1 Honour Roll and he has a tree in the Greenwald WW1 Avenue of Honour (near Dartmoor, in south-west Victoria).
BETHUNE : Lachlan BETHUNE 1832-1912 and his wife Christina BETHUNE (BEATON) were married in 1856 and some of their children were born and died at Carapook. Duncan b. 1859 Lyndhurst, d. 1868 Muntham, James Gilespy b. 1864, Muntham. Their family was - William, Duncan, Norman, John, James Gillespie, Florence Bothwell, Duncan James, James Gillespie, Neil, Sarah & Duncan Gillespie.
BIGGIN : Ellenora BIGGIN (nee HAYWOOD) 1807-1854, 1st wife of Thomas BIGGIN was said to have been buried on "Muntham" Station in 1854 (oral history), death not in indexes. Thomas BIGGIN, b. 1811 Yorkshire, married Eleonora HAYWOOD in 1833, Yorkshire and they had 3 children - Joseph Haywood, Thomas & Henry. The family arrived at Portland in 1852 on the "Emma Eugenia".
BIVIOUN : Samuel BIVIOUN c.1824-1872, b. Wiltshire, England, selector, granted a lease to 349a 05r 7p in the parish of Bruk Bruk in August 1865, d. Hamilton, S-W Victoria. In 1855 he married Elizabeth "Betsy" SMALLWOOD c.1834-1919 and they had a family of 7, born 1856-1865 at Hamilton, S-W Victoria.
BLUME : Carl August BLUME 1830-1917, paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £195. He named this property "Blumesbury" and had purchased it 1873 from John McNICOL. Carl BLUME first married Emilie KREIG (1842-1867) in 1858, then Elizabeth McNAUGHTON (1850-1884) in 1882 and finally Augusta Amelia GALLE (1855-1899) in 1885. He died a wealthy man at Mount Gambier in 1917.
BOWDEN : John BOWDEN 1829-1866, had a daughter Phoebe b. 1862 "Muntham" Station. John BOWDEN from Wiltshire and Mary Ann COUSINS, also from Wiltshire were married in 1857 and had the following family - Catherine Cooper, Phoebe Jane, John George & William Henry. John BOWDEN died in 1866 and is buried in the Sandford Cemetery. His widow Mary Ann married John BELLINGER in 1870 and they had another four children - Samuel Edward James, Frederick Charles, Sarah Ann & Harriet Elizabeth Jane.
BRAIM : Alfred Wilson BRAIM c.1843-1933, was the manager of "Muntham" estate for Nathan THORNLEY from the 1880s to 1900s. After the Carapook fire in 1900 he organised the replacement of 25 miles of burnt fences on "Muntham" Estate. He was a son John & Johanna Maria BRAIM, an old pioneering family of Port Fairy. He died at Port Fairy in 1933, aged 90y, and was buried in the Port Fairy cemetery.
BRENNAN : Thomas BRENNAN or "Old Brennan" was the Overseer of Sheep, and a dingo hunter for Edward Henty at "Muntham in the 1840s. According to Richmond HENTY's recollections "Old Brennan" was a bit of a folk hero as he had served as a Powder Monkey at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
BRIERLEY : Samuel BRIERLEY 1822-1887, farmer of Carapook, had a signature on the 1875 Carapook School petition (not shown on the corresponding map). It has been difficult to locate this Samuel BRIERLEY. He was probably from Manchester, England and married Elizabeth Jane NASH in 1869.
BROMLEY : James Edward / Edmund BROMLEY c1818-1906, signed on an 1865 letter from the Bruk Bruk School Committee and had a 12 year old son listed as prospective student at Bruk Bruk School in 1865. James Edward BROMLEY who married in 1849 in Adelaide, South Australia to Catherine HILL had a son James Edgar BROMLEY born in South Australia in 1851. Another son Henry Hill BROMLEY was also born in South Australia in 1856, but died there in 1857. James BROMLEY and family appear to have emigrated to New Zealand as they, along with son James Edgar BROMLEY were in Otago, Southland, New Zealand in 1893. James Edward BROMLEY and his wife Catherine were both buried in Dunedin Cemetery in 1906. James Edward BROMLEY appears to be a relation (perhaps Uncle) of George EDWARDS of Bruk Bruk (listed below).
BROWN : Charles BROWN 1805-1884, had a daughter, Malvinear b. 1862 "Muntham" Station and a daughter Ellen b. 1861 at "Satimer" Station, both near Carapook. This appears to be the family of Charles BROWN from the USA who married Martha HALLIDAY in 1849 and had the following family - Susannah, William Henry, Mary, Martha, James, Ellen, Malvinear, Jane, Charles, Elizabeth Esther, George & Margaret. The family appears to have finished up at Macarthur where Charles and Martha died.
BULL : Henry BULL 1844-1912, b. 1844 Mount Barker, South Australia, son of Joseph BULL (Chemist) & Jane RUNDLE. His father died when he was young and he came to Victoria and worked as a labourer on "Muntham" station in the 1860s. He then moved to "Grassdale" station, near Digby where he married Annetta ROWE, daughter of Thomas ROWE & Hannah KING, of "Grassdale" station at the station in 1872. Henry was an early land selector at Salt Lakes, near Harrow in 1872 and it was there he expanded his holding, raised a family of 10 until his death at Harrow in 1912. Both Henry and his wife Annetta are buried in the Harrow Cemetery.
BURCHELL : Henry BURCHELL 1829-1897, a labourer of Carapook had a signature on 1875 Carapook School petition showing 3 school-aged children, living 1/2 mile NE of Carapook. Henry BURCHELL from Wheatfield, Oxfordshire married Agnes HART from Ayrshire, Scotland in 1854 and they had the following family, some of whom were born at Carapook - Elizabeth, Isabella, Mary Jane, James William, John Henry, Joseph, George, Alfred & Caroline.
BUTLER : George Elias BUTLER 1844-1918, b. 1844 Thurles, Co Tipperary, Ireland, son of Dr James BUTLER & Elizabeth PEARSE arrived in Victoria on the "Great Britain" in October 1869. He married Catherine Elizabeth ABBOTT, b. 1850 Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land in 1875 at Ballarat, Vic. George was a Grazier of "Blumesbury" Carapook when his son Cecil was born in 1884. George later leased "Glengleeson" near Macarthur from about 1887-1907 before he retired to Hamilton where he died in 1918. His wife Catherine died at "Glengleeson" in 1892.
BYRNE : William BYRNE 1859-1920, born Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, to Michael BYRNE and Theresa Mary THOMPSON, married Winifred Mary FEELY 1863-1930, daughter of James FEELY and Winifred HAYDEN in 1883. In 1913 William BYRNE and family were recorded as living at "Blackwood Farm", Bella Vista, Carapook. This places them as one of the families operating the model dairy farms (article in "The Pastoralist Magazine", December 1912) set up by Norman & Jack McDONALD of "Bella Vista".
William BYRNE and Winifred FEELY had the following family, all of whom were born 1884-1906 at Haddon, west of Ballarat - Eliza Margaret, Mary Ellen, Winifred, William, Theresa Magdalena, Elsie Gertrude, Thomas Patrick, Anne Elizabeth, Julia Alphonsus, Rose Agatha, Aileen Bridget, James Bryan & John. A number of these children married and remained in the Casterton area after the parents and most family moved back to Haddon, Ballarat by 1918.
CAMERON : Alexander Clayhills CAMERON (1823-1874), married Jessie ROBERTSON (1828-1895), dau of Duncan ROBERTSON and Margaret STEWART in 1858. Alexander was landowner at Satimer or Bruk Bruk in the 1870s and had the following family - Margaret Ann, Wilson, James Alexander, Jessie, Ann, Duncan Angus, Mary Robertson, Edith Emilie and Alexandrina.
CAMERON : Donald CAMERON 1823-1908 and Elizabeth 'Eliza' FLETCHER 1841-1910 of 'Dunan', Henty, on the Wannon river south of Carapook had a large family. Two of their sons Hugh CAMERON (1875-1918) and Colin Fletcher CAMERON, are recorded on the Carapook World War 1 Honour Roll. Hugh CAMERON is listed as a past pupil of Carapook State School.
CARMICHAEL : George CARMICHAEL (1811-1891), had a son Charles b. 1866 "Muntham", a son Alexander b. 1870, Carapook. George CARMICHAEL and Susan NASH were married at Chetwynd Station in 1846. They had a large family between 1847 and 1873, some of whom were born at Carapook or Muntham. Their family was : Elizabeth, Mary Ann, George Charles, Thomas, Alexander, Sarah Ann, James, William, Margaret Small, Catherine, Charles, Alexander and Samuel.
CAWKER : Edith Margaret CAWKER 1877-1968, b. Casterton, daughter of Thomas CAWKER & Mary CAMERON was a teacher at S.S. 1969 Carapook from 1907 to 1913. She married in 1940 to James Thomas KERR 1871-1949 of Macarthur, S-W Victoria, they both died in Melbourne.
CHAPMAN : Robert CHAPMAN (1839-1903), from Norfolk, England married Clara LANDER (1845-1936) in 1864 and had a son Thomas, b. 1865 at "Muntham". The known family of Robert and Clara CHAPMAN was - Thomas, Edward Herbert, Adeline Emma, Edith, Clarice, Rosina Mary Ann and Clara Caroline.
CHERITON : Richard Haydon CHERITON (1836-1900), from Devonshire, England married Mary McLENNAN (1834-1923) farmer of Sandford and Carapook in the 1860s & '70s and moved north to Deniliquin, NSW in 1873.
CHESLETT : Frederick CHESLETT (1846-1930), from Tamania married Louisa PEARCE (1857-1949) in 1876 had a large family in the Casterton, Carapook, Coleraine & Goroke areas.
CLARKE : John James CLARKE (1886-1968) is recorded on the Carapook WW1 Honour Roll and appear to be a son of John CLARKE and Mary TREMAIN / WHITE and was born at Sandford. In 1916 he was noted as... "head farming man on Muntham Station for a lengthy period, has vacated his position and enlisted for the war."
CLARKE : William CLARKE (1882-1971) is recorded on the Carapook WW1 Honour Roll and appears to be a son of John CLARKE and Mary TREMAIN / WHITE and was born at Sandford.
COE : William COE (c.1824-1887), born Norfolkshire, England to William COE and .?.; arrived in Port Phillip (Victoria) c.1851; first engaged at "Muntham" Station before he became involved in farming in the Coleraine area; died Coleraine, Victoria. In 1857 he married Frances Elizabeth PITCHER 1837-1924, born Dorsetshire, England to Aaron PITCHER and Elizabeth PITCHER; 10 children were born from 1859-1880 [Elizabeth, Mary, Isabella, William, John, George, Frances, Albert, Frederick and Thomas COE.]
COOK : Charles COOK (1859-1933), born Casterton, son of George COOK and Rachel Ann DONALDSON married Rebecca PURDON / COOK (no relation) in 1879 and had the following family - Thomas George, b 1879 Casterton (married Mary Ann HURST); Charles Richard, b 1881 Cast.; John, b 1882 Cast.; Charlotte Agnes, b 1887 Cast.; William Arthur, b 1889 Cast.; Elizabeth, b 1890 Cast.; James, b 1893 Cast.; Frank, b 1895 Cast.; Ada, b 1898 Cast.; Violet, b 1902 Cast.; Pearl, b 1903 Cast.; Harold, b 1905 Cast. Charles COOK was recorded as Groom at Muntham on the 1881 Baptismal certificate of his son Charles Richard.
CORNEY : William Robert CORNEY (1816-1898), b. London, England to Robert CORNEY and Mary NICHOLSON; came to Port Phillip in 1840 and squatted on "Wando Vale B" ("Wando") station 1840-1854; his brother Dr Isaac CORNEY squatted on "Cashmere" station on the Wando river 1840-1849; William m. in 1846 at "Wando Vale" station to Stephan Rowan ROBERTSON c.1809-1900, sister of John George ROBERTSON 1803-1863, squatter of "Wando Vale" station, and they had one son Robert William CORNEY 1847-1913; William died at Portland, Victoria in 1898 and his widow Sthan died there in 1900. William CORNEY and his son Robert CORNEY purchased "Tulse Hill," north of Carapook from Willioam VALE in 1871 and Robert settled on "Tulse Hill" until his death there in 1913. COTTER : Michael COTTER (1818-1913), a labourer of Carapook, had a signature on the 1875 Carapook School petition showing 5 school-aged children, living 1/2 mile NW of Carapook. Michael COTTER was married in 1860 Catherine McINTOSH and they had the following family, some of whom were born at Carapook - Donald, Fanny Frances McCOY, Annie, James Angus, Ellen, John Archibald, William Alexander & Mary.
COULSON, William Ralph Francis
William Ralph Francis COULSON (1875-1927), son of Francis Stubbs COULSON and Harriet Martha DIWELL, married Margaret Ley HUMPHRIES in 1903 and lived at Carapook in the early 1900's. They had a family of - Carol, Lawrence Francis, Athol William, Eion Ralph, Sidney John & Sheila Margaret.
CRIPPS : Joseph Henry CRIPPS (~1830-1906) and his wife Harriet BIRD (~1833-1861) and an infant son, Joseph Henry CRIPPS, from Essex, England arrived at Portland, S-W Victoria on the "Hooghly" in March 1854. They were engaged by Edward HENTY of "Muntham" Station for 12 months for £60 + rations. The family later moved to Geelong, Ballarat and eventually to Foster in Gippsland where Joseph Henry CRIPPS died in 1906.
DALE : John DALE (1814-1866) and his wife Ellen SWEENEY, both transported as convicts to Van Diemen's land, moved to "Muntham" Station from Tasmania with two children in 1848 to work for Edward HENTY.
DALTON : Joseph Piercy DALTON (1825-1909), died at "Burnside" Carapook which was the DOUGHENEY residence and he was buried in Coleraine. Joseph was the father of Sarah Ann DALTON, wife of James DOUGHENEY who had land north east of Carapook in Sawpit Gully.
DANCOCKS : Hecules Hailes DANCOCKS (1806-1876), from Gloucestershire, England was a manager for Edward HENTY at "Muntham" Station. The known family of Hercules DANCOCKS and Elizabeth BARNES (1818-1894) was - Hercules Hailes, Edward Bearcroft, Eliza Jane, John Thornton and Eliza Kate. The three boys, all born in Gloucestershire, married FOSTER sisters, daughters of Charles Haydock FOSTER and Mary O'BRIEN.
DAVEY : Jessie Jane DAVEY 1856-1927, b. Ballarat, Victoria, daughter of James Solomon DAVEY and Eliza HARVEY was the teacher at S.S. 1624 Carapook from 1875-1878. She married Thomas LAMB in 1876 and they had at least nine children in the Wimmera and around Ballarat. One of her sons Robert Edgar Herbert LAMB was killed in France in WW1. Jessie died at Ballarat in 1927 and her husband Thomas LAMB died in Melbourne in 1945, both are buried in the Ballarat New Cemetery.
DAVIS : George DAVIS 1831-1908 was married in 1859 at the Catholic Church, Penola, South Australia to Catherine MULLEN 1830-1906 and at one time worked at "Muntham" Station.
DAVIS : William Daley DAVIS (1859-1920), a land selector of Carapook in the 1880s married Ellen Barclay MURRAY in 1895 and they had the following family - William Murray, Douglas Vincent & Marie Isabel. Descendants still live at Carapook.
DIMOND : Alfred James DIMOND (c.1830-1922), worked for Edward HENTY at "Muntham" Station in 1852 after arriving at Portland with his wife Caroline RICKETTS on the "Tasmania" in 1851. Later they moved to Portland.
DIXON : William DIXON (1839-1883) a labourer of Bruk Bruk, was a signature on the 1875 Carapook School petition showing 3 school-aged children, living 2 miles NW of Carapook. William Nicholas DIXON from Durham, England married Mary Ann LAITY in 1867 at Warrnambool and they had the following family - William Nicholas, Thomas, Mary Ann, John, Edward / Edwin 'Ted' and Margaret. The family moved to near Mount Gambier, South Australia.
DOLMAN : William DOLMAN (1817-1884), was the Cattle Overseer for Edward HENTY at "Muntham" Station for 14 years after arriving in 1839. Later he established butcher shops in Casterton, Merino & Coleraine. William DOLMAN from Bristol, Gloucestershire married Uleyear WOMBWELL at Merino in 1858 and had the following family - Susannah, William, James, David, Ann, John, Joseph, Charles, Charles, Mary Ann, Emma, Samuel & Betsy.
DOUGHENEY : James DOUGHENEY (1832-1875), a farmer of Bruk Bruk, was a signature on the 1875 Carapook School petition showing 3 school-aged children, living 1 mile NE of Carapook. James DOUGHENEY from Kilkenny, Ireland married Margaret MARTIN at Wando Vale in 1856 and they had the following family born at Muntham or Carapook - Johny, Bessie, James, Charles, Angus Patrick & Archibald Richard.
DOYLE : James DOYLE (Snr) (1829-1898) paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £175. This is probably the James DOYLE from Dublin who lived near the Wannon River, south of Carapook and was married to Alice LANDY (1829-1905) and they had a large family.
DOYLE : Peter Patrick DOYLE (1863-1936), son of James DOYLE (Snr) married Ann Nora COLEMAN (1862-1900) and they were recorded as living at Muntham. James & Ann Nora DOYLE had the following family - Catherine, Alice May, Maud Bridget, John Andrew, Agnes Honora, Honora Frances Veronica. After the death of his first wife in 1905, Peter DOYLE married Mary Teresa RYAN (1884-1964) in 1906 and had two children - Veronica and Leo Patrick.

DURBIDGE : Simon (Simeon) DURBIDGE (1822-1896), and his wife Martha STANLEY lived at Carapook from 1870 with a family comprising - Annie, Simeon, James, Susan, Richard, William, Francis, Frederick & Frances.
EASTWOOD : James EASTWOOD c.1827-1894 had a signature on an 1865 letter from Bruk Bruk School Committee. He also owned land north west of the Carapook settlement, fronting the Felton Road in the 1860s. His son George Henry EASTWOOD, aged 12y, was a prospective pupil for a school at Bruk Bruk in 1865. The family later moved to Minyip and then to Melbourne.
EAVES : William EAVES (ca 1832-1890), owned a large block of land (~450 acres) north of the Carapook township, in the parish of Bruk Bruk in the late 1860s. William EAVES married a widow Eunice UNDERWOOD (nee VAUGHAN) 1826-1911 in 1863. They had two boys in Ballarat and Melbourne and the family were in England for the 1881 census. William EAVES died in England in 1890 and it appears that his widow and children may have returned to Victoria.
ECKEL : George ECKEL (1840-1926) paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £10. Appears to be the George ECKEL from Germany who married Johanne KRANZ in 1877 and moved north to Minyip where they raised a family of 7 chn.
EDMONDS : John Henry EDMONDS (1831-1909) had a signature on an 1865 letter from the Bruk Bruk School Committee. The wife of John EDMONDS gave birth to twin girls in February 1868 in the Parish of Bruk Bruk, Carapook. This appears to be the John Henry EDMONDS who married Mary JOHNS at Nairne, SA in 1855 and had the following family - Mary, John Richard, Mary Ann, Margaret Jane, James Henry, George, Eva Lucy, Ada Louise, William Thomas, Essington Albert, George Alfred, Lavinia Maud, Beatrice Mary, Charles Leslie. A number of this children were born at Carapook, Bruk Bruk or Beerik.
EDWARDS : George EDWARDS (c1844-1923) b. Hindmarsh, South Australia was named as a 21 year old farmer of Bruk Bruk in May 1866 when he married Ellen SHAW age 16y of Hotspur, Victoria at Digby, Victoria. George and Ellen had a large family near Harrow. Ellen died in 1922 at Harrow and George in 1923 at Naracoorte, South Australia. George EDWARDS whoes mother was Sophia BROMLEY appears to be a nephew of James Edward BROMLEY of Bruk Bruk (listed above).
EVANS : John EVANS __?__-1848, a labourer, bullock driver & general servant for Edward HENTY of "Muntham" drowned when crossing the flooded Fitzroy River in August 1848. His mate (not named) was rescued by Mr. EDGAR and Mr. STURT.
FERRIER : John FERRIER (1840-1919), a farmer in the parish of Beerik near Carapook, had a signature on the 1875 Carapook School petition but not shown on the corresponding Carapook map as Beerik is the parish to the east of Carapook. John FERRIER from Scotland married Alice Jane HANLON in 1872 and they had the following family - William James Hanlon, John Middlemas, Peter David, Sutton Henry (d. at Gallipoli 1915), Elizabeth Maria Beatrice, Alicia Jane, Oliver Douglas, Wilhelmina Esther & Mary Middlemas.
FETHERSTONHAUGH : Cuthbert FETHERSTONHAUGH (1837-1917+), undertook 6 years of "Colonial Experience" on Muntham Station with Tom HENTY from 1856-1862. Cuthbert published his reminiscences under the title of "After Many Days" in 1917, which included a significant section on life at "Muntham" Station and around the district with the HENTY family during the 1850s and 1860s. Cuthbert was born in 1837, Westmeath, Ireland to Cuthbert FETHERSTONHAUGH 1803-1892 and Susan CURTIS 1798-1871. Cuthbert FETHERSTONHAUGH married Flora Agnes MURCHISON in 1876. His father was the Police Magistrate in Hamilton for many years and was fondly known in the district as "The Governor".
FIDLER : Edward Charles FIDLER (1841-1888) married Charlotte Louisa JAMES in 1871 at Hamilton and they had the following family - Edward Charles (b. 1871, Bruk Bruk), George Henry, Alice Louisa, Edward Charles, Francis, Charlotte Louisa, Clara Emma, Arthur, Alexander, Frederick Ernest & Lucy Harriet.
FILGATE : Herbert Jonathon FILGATE 1863-1932, b. Clare, South Australia to Jonathon FILGATE and Fanny Eliza GLEESON, m. 1901 to Mary Ann "Polly" HARWOOD 1871-1923, b. Sandford, S-W Victoria to James HARWOOD and Mary Ann CAMPBELL. Herbert and Mary moved from "Nangeela" near Casterton, where he had been station manager, to be a grazier at "Redcliffe" Carapook in 1913. They had 3 children : Jonathon "Burton", Herbert "Bruce" & Kathleen Patricia "Patty" who attended school at Carapook State School and Casterton Higher Elementary School. During his time in the district from 1895-1932 Herbert was a station manager at "Ardno," "Nangeela," "Runnymede," "Muntham," "Caupaul" & "Kadnook" stations. Mary Ann died at "Runnymede" station in 1923 and Herbert died at Casterton in 1932 and both are buried in the Casterton Cemetery.
FINK : M & B J FINK are named as landowners north of Carapook in the "Tulse Hill" area of the Parish of Bruk Bruk in the 1870s. This appears to be a Moses FINK (1810-1885) and his son Benjamin Josman FINK who emigrated from Guernsey & Jersey in the Channel Islands to Victoria, Australia in 1861.
FITZGERALD : Bryan Cunningham FITZGERALD 1833-1913, paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £122. Bryan had a daughter Margaret Jane b. c.1870, Carapook. Bryan FITZGERALD married Robina HAWKINS in 1863 and they had the following family - Mary Ellen, Isabella Hawkins, Julia, Margaret Jane, John Bryan, Eugene Fin, Robina, Bryan Cunningham, George Carruthers, Gerald Thomas, Bryan Reginald, Leo Cussen.
FITZGERALD : Thomas FITZGERALD c.1830-1894, b. Co Kerry, Ireland married Johannah TIBY (c1830-1898), b Co Limerick, Ireland at Adelaide, South Australia in 1854. They appear to have had 3 or 4 children in South Australia (not on the births CD) and 3 or 4 more children in Victoria. Thomas FITZGERALD, farmer of Bruk Bruk had his mark witnessed by Denis NASH when he signed the Bruk Bruk School petition of 1865 stating that he had 3 school aged children ready to attend a proposed new school at Bruk Bruk. They were Mary (age 10y), Catherine (age 7y) and John (age 4y).
FITZPATRICK : John FITZPATRICK 1854-1936, born Barrabool Hills (Geelong), Victoria to Hugh FITZPATRICK and Bridget AHEARN, employee on "Muntham" Station in the 1881 when he married Isabella MURRAY 1854-1932, born "Muntham" Station to David Munro MURRAY and Margaret RYAN. John and Isabella moved to the Horsham district before 1890, had at least 9 children before Isabella died in Melbourne, Victoria and John died at Ballarat, Victoria.
FORD : Benjamin FORD 1858-1935, b. Merino, Victoria, son of Frederick FORD and Kate Mary McKENZIE eresided at Merino before 1900 and then was a grazier of "Springfield" Carapook before 1920 and had a family of 7 children.
FORBES : David FORBES abt.1830-aft.1869, in 1865 he selected 290 acres in the parish of Carapook; in 1868 he was appointed as a School Committee Member for the Bruk Bruk School Committee; in 1869 he appears to have listed 5 acres of land for sale in the parish of Carapook. [No other information ??]
FORD : Frederick William FORD 1900-1964, b. Merino, Victoria, son of Benjamin FORD and Susan PRIME is listed on the Carapook WW1 Honour Roll. Frederick FORD applied to enlist in 1918 in the AIF as an engineering student but was demobilised as the war ended.
FROST : Joseph FROST abt 1810-1843+ was a stockman employed by Edward HENTY at "Muntham" in 1843. He was sent along with James SMEAD, another stockman with a mob of cattle and settled the new land at Mount Gambier in 1843. The two stockmen established their camp at Browne's Lake, Mount Gambier, the only source of surface water available at the time in the area.
GIBBS ? (GILBO ?) : Mr GIBBS [sic GILBO] and family lost a lot of farm equipment in the Carapook fire in January, 1900. It is possible this name may have been an error in the newspaper and that it may have been be William GILBO not Mr GIBBS at Carapook. William GILBO had land in the same area as William HUTTON who also lost property in this fire.
GIBSON : John GIBSON, a baker of Carapook, had a signature on the 1875 Carapook School petition but not marked on the corresponding map. This appears to be John GIBSON, b. ca 1835, co Cavan, Ireland who married Johann Mary ADAMS in 1867 at Penola, South Australia. They appear to have had the following family - Charles Vincent, Jessie Mary Winifred, Mary Frances and Joseph.
GILBO : John GILBO (1835-1895), had a signature on an 1865 letter from Bruk Bruk School Committee with 2 school-aged children, living 2 miles NW of Carapook. John GILBO had married Bridget GILCHRIST, 1854, Ireland and he became a farmer about 2 miles north west of the Carapook settlement where the paddock is still referred to as "Gilbo's". John GILBO paid rates in 1875 on a Bruk Bruk property valued at £53. John & Bridget had the following family - Mary, William Thomas, John, James, Margaret Ann & William. A grandaughter Margaret became a teacher and married Ivan POVEY, also from Carapook.
GLANCY : Hugh GLANCY 1822-1908, b. Ireland, arrived in 1841 and at "Muntham" in the same year and was there when Edward HENTY sent a party to set up a station at Mount Gambier in 1841-2. The men placed in charge of the new run were Jim Smead, Joe Frost, McKay (a Sydney native), with Paddy Hann (an old soldier), as cook.
GODING : Richard GODING (1832-1869) b. 1832, Somersetshire, England arrived at Portland, Australia in 1851 as an 18 year old on the "Tasmania". He was employed by Edward Henty of "Muntham Station" and then moved to Melbourne where, in 1853 he married Sarah Ann MARSHALL (1824-1919) and they had at least 4 children before Richard's early death at the age of 37.
GRANT : John Scott GRANT (1822-1879) paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £81. John was a farmer and publican who had married Ann KILPATRICK in 1841 and raised a large family in the Dartmoor, Sandford and Casterton area.
GREENHAM : George GREENHAM (1819-1890) married Margaret WATMOUGH in 1848 and they had the following family - Jane, James, George, Mary Elizabeth, Julia, Alfred, Frances, Albert James (ca 1863 Carapook), Peter, Alice. Albert James GREENHAM married an Emily JENNINGS in 1891 and they went to Western Australia.
GRINHAM : Israel GRINHAM (1831-1893), brother of George GREENHAM above married Margery McNEIL in 1857 and they had the following family - John, Israel, Isabella, Charles, Gerald / Jerrod, Margery, Henry Alexander, Lewis Edwin, Margaret Ellen (b. 1874, Carapook), Roy McNeil, Catherine Louisa, Frances Eva, Margaret Jean. Descendants of this GRINHAM family lived at Carapook for many years.
GUTHRIDGE : Richard Charles GUTHRIDGE (1837-1934) had a signature on the 1875 Carapook School petition and map showing 4 school-aged children, living 1 mile NW of Carapook. Richard GUTHRIDGE married Elizabeth PITTS in 1860 at Portland, Victoria and they had a large family at Portland, Carapook and Edenhope.
HADDEN : David HADDEN (1828- ? ), and Sarah NAPIER married, 1854 in Ireland and had the following family - James, Thomas, John, Jemima, William, Robert & Samuel (b. 1868, Carapook, m. Elena EDWARDS).
HALES : John "Jack" HALES c.1828-1909, b. Huntingdon, England to Jonathan HALES and Mary ABBOTT, arrived on the "Priam" in August 1852 at Portland Bay, Victoria; employed by Edward HENTY at "Muntham" Station ; and for 48 years by John ROBERTSON of "Struan" near Naracoorte, SA ; d. 1909 near Penola, South Australia ; m. 1857 Portland, Victoria to Catherine McCANN c.1835-1900, b. Dublin, Ireland to John McCANN and Mary GRANGE ; d. Glenroy, near Penola, South Australia. John and Catherine HALES had the following known children born at Strathdownie, Victoria and near Penola, South Australia : Mary, Jonathan, Elizabeth, Margaret, Robert Joseph, William Henry, Rose and Isabella. John and Catherine HALES both buried in the Penola cemetery.

HARDWICKE : Charles HARDWICKE 1822-1900, b. Launceston, Van Diemen's Land, England, to Charles Browne HARDWICKE and Elizabeth CHAPMAN was a selector 373 acres, parish of Bruk Bruk in 1865, d. Melbourne, Victoria. In 1856 he married at Hamilton, S-W Victoria to Elizabeth DOIG 1834-1901, b. Edinburgh, Scotland to James DOIG and Elizabeth TAWSE and they had a family of 8, born 1857-1873 in Tasmania and at Hamilton, S-W Victoria.
HART : James HART (1844-194) had a signature on the 1875 Carapook School petition and map showing 5 school-aged children, living 1/2 mile East of Carapook.
HARVEY : John "Jack the Pointer" HARVEY c.1800-1872, employee at "Muntham" about 1840, bullock driver at "Muntham" Station in the 1850s, known as "Jack the Pointer" as he had a stiff finger, and was an "old hand" who came over from Van Diemen's Land with Mr HENTY. He was charged on 2 Nov 1857 in the Casterton Court with selling a working bullock belonging to Edward HENTY. Appears to have drowned in the Glenelg as he body was revored at Dartmoor in 1872. Appears to have one of the "identities" in the Glenelg & Wannon area in the very early days of settlement, he may have been one of the original HENTY group as was James SMEAD, that settled "Merino Downs" & "Muntham" in 1837.
HAWKINS : John HAWKINS paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £27. There appears to be two possible John HAWKINS in the area at this time. It may have been John Benjamin HAWKINS, married to Mary Ann HENRY who had 9 children in Casterton or it could be John HAWKINS, carrier of Digby, son of John HAWKINS & Frances LAMB who married Catherine FARLEY in 1876.
HAYES : William HAYES (ca 1825-1899) had a signature on the 1875 Carapook School petition showing him as a labourer of Bruk Bruk, 1 school-aged child, living 1 mile N of Carapook. This appears to be William HAYES who was married to Mary NIVEN and had children - Thomas (b. 1855, TIP, IRL, m. Bessie DOUGHENEY at Carapook in 1887), William (1858, Dartmoor), John (1862 Tahara) & Margaret (1863 Tahara)
HAYMAN : Henry Thomas HAYMAN (1863-1930) was a teacher at Carapook S.S. 1969 from 1888-1902, prior to this he was at Tarrayoukyan. He married Catherine Ann BRACEWELL in 1883 and had the following family - Carrie, Walter & Harry, who is listed on the WW1 Honour Roll at Carapook.
HEENAN : John HEENAN (ca 1836-1913) had a signature on the 1875 Carapook School petition and map showing 4 school-aged children, living 2½ miles East of Carapook. John HEENAN was married to Johanna O'CALLAGHAN and they had a large family born in the Carapook and Sandford areas. John HEENAN's parents and connection with the other HEENAN families in the area is unknown at this time.???

HEFFERNAN : Denis HEFFERNAN (1849-1921), and Johanna FITZGERALD (1850-1912) were married in 1871 in Hamilton and had the following family - Margaret (b. 1872, Carapook), John 'Jack', Denis, Honora, Catherine, Ellen & Michael. This family was probably in the Carapook area from 1872 to 1887 when they moved to Harrow.
HEFFERNAN : J. HEFFERNAN, listed as a landowner in 1879 in the parish of Carapook, south near the Wannon River. This was probably Johanna (nee FITZGERALD) wife of Denis HEFFERNAN.
HENTY : Edward HENTY (1810-1878), son of Thomas HENTY and Frances Elizabeth HOPKINS from West Tarring, Sussex. He became the occupier of Muntham Pastoral Run from 1837 after arriving at Portland in 1834. He married Anna Maria GALLIE in 1840, there were no children. Edward was M.L.A. 1856-1861. HENTY : Richmond HENTY (1837-1904) was born in 1837 at Portland Bay, eldest child of Stephen George HENTY and Jane PACE. In his book "Australiana" published in 1886 he reminisced about visiting his Uncle Edward HENTY's property "Muntham" and being involved as a young lad, in a pig shooting adventure.
HENTY : Thomas HENTY (1836-1887) was born in 1836 at Launceston, Van Diemen's Land, third son of Henry HENTY 1800-1882 and Charlotte CARTER 1806-1865. Thomas "Tom" HENTY was the overseer of Horses & Cattle at "Muntham" station for his uncle Edward HENTY. This was in the period 1856-1862 when Cuthbert FETHERSTONHAUGH was also on the property for his colonial experience.
HERON : Thomas HERON (1825-1906) landowner in 1871 in the Parish of Bruk Bruk married Jessie Ann McPHERSON (1831-1916) in 1853 and had the following family - Thomas, John, Helen, Francis, Arthur, Herbert, George, Alfred, James & Walter born in south-west Victoria (Coleraine - Hamilton area).
HIGGINS : Maria HIGGINS was a teacher at S.S. 1969 Carapook from 1903 to 1904.
HOBBS : William HOBBS (1826-1913) was married in 1844, Hertfordshire, England to Emily GEARY (1826-1898) and emigrated to South Australia in 1849. William and had a large family and moved to Victoria in 1870 where he worked at "Muntham" Station for a short time before selecting land near Harrow in 1873. William and Emily had the following family - Mary, George William, Joseph, Jessie Ann, Emma, Eliza, William, Ann, Charlotte, Jane, Thomas & Amy. William and Emily HOBBS are buried in the Harrow Cemetery.
HODGETTS : Nathaniel HODGETTS (1850-1935), was a grandson of Thomas HODGETTS from Staffordshire, a convict who arrived on the 'Scarborough' as a part of the Second Fleet to NSW in 1790. Nathaniel HODGETTS b. 1850 Portland, Vic, son of Thomas HODGETTS and Alicia DAVY, married Harriet NEAVE in 1873. Nathaniel was from Carapook at the time of his marriage in 1873 and they had the following family - Alice May Ruthin, William John, James Nathaniel, Ernest Walter & Albert Francis.
HOLLARD : George Gilbert "Giles" HOLLARD (1817-1912), b. Devonshire, England, son of James HOLLARD and Love NAISH, married in England, arrived with 3 children at Portland, S-W Victoria in 1849, employed by Edward HENTY at "Muntham" and later returned to Portland.
HOLZGREFE : Wilhelm HOLZGREFE (1844-1897) paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £66. He was a son of Johann Friedrich Heinrich Christoph "Christopher" HOLZGREFE & Catherine Dorothea Elizabeth BUNGE who arrived in Adelaide in 1854 and moved to the Carapook area in 1869. William was a brother of Julia Anna HOLZGREFE who was married to Abraham JOHNSTON of Carapook. William married Agnes GARDINER from Merino, in 1886 and they raised a family at Sheep Hills, near Warracknabeal.

HORNIBROOK : John Wiseman HORNIBROOK (1827-1901) and Annabella MANNING were married at Sandhurst (Bendigo) in 1859 and some of their family were born at Muntham. Their family was - Charles Elwood, Ellen (b. 1863, Muntham), John Thomas, unnamed female (b. 1866, Muntham), James Wiseman & Mary Jane.
HOUSTON : David HOUSTON (1838-1928) a carpenter of Carapook, had a signature on 1875 Carapook School petition and map showing 4 school-aged children, living 1 mile South of Carapook. Known children were - James, David, Thomas, David, Seline and Robert Hamilton
HOWLETT : John HOWLETT (1830-1909) from Cambridgeshire, England arrived at Geelong in 1857 with his wife and two children. Later they lived at Carapook or Bruk Bruk in the 1860s & 1870s. He was married to Mary Ann JEX (1831-1918) and they had a known family of ten children.
HULSE : Stephen HULSE (abt 1825-1863+), owned two block of land (abt 110 acres) in Carroll's Road, north of the Carapook township, in the parish of Bruk Bruk in 1863. Stephen HULSE married Emily NORRIS in 1853 in Victoria and they had children at Belfast, Carisbrook and Lake Learmonth in the 1850s before purchasing the above land in 1863. HUTTON : Robert Lowe HUTTON 1834-1903, b. Fifeshire, Scotland to David HUTTON and Janet HUTTON; selected 378 acres, parish of Bruk Bruk in 1865; paid rates in 1875 on a Bruk Bruk property valued at £80; d. HUTTON : William HUTTON 1836-1916, b. Fifeshire, Scotland to David HUTTON and Janet HUTTON; d. Geelong, Victoria; married in 1871 to Mary Ann HARRY c.1847-1924, b. Cornwall, England to Richard HARRY and Mary JELBART; they had the following family - Mary, David, Richard Francis, Janet, Elizabeth, William (b. 1880, Carapook, mar. 1910 Ethel GUNDRY), Lilias, Ellen, Robert Lowe, Martha & James Bruce. William HUTTON selected 194 acres, parish of Bruk Bruk in 1868; paid rates in 1875 on a Bruk Bruk property valued at £119. Mr Hutton lost stock and fodder in the Carapook fire of January 1900. William is a brother of Robert HUTTON above, both sons of David & Janet HUTTON.
HYLAND : John HYLAND, a farm worker of Carapook, was a witness at the inquest into the accidental death of Johann SCHULTZ in Dec 1874 when his horse and cart overturned at Carapook. [No family connection has been made with John HYLAND in the Carapook area at this time.]
HYLAND : Patrick "Pat" HYLAND b. abt 1822, Ireland, m. Elizabeth DARCY, arrived in 1841, Overseer on "Hilgay Station" for 10y, then for Edward HENTY on "Muntham Station". He purchased the "Sandford Hotel" from Capt. WARDLEY for a short while c.1859 and he sold it to Charles GRINHAM by the end of 1859. He had 3 children who all married and he died in Hamilton in 1884.
JACKSON : Alexander William JACKSON (1822-1879), b. Falmouth, Cornwall, England married Margaret RIORDAN (1831-1899)at "Muntham" in 1856 and they had the following children: Ellen (1856), William Alexander (1862 Melbourne), Sarah Adelaide (1866 Queenscliff). Alexander and family moved to Queenscliff where he became a fisherman and he died there in 1879.
JACKSON : James JACKSON (1832-1900), was head stockman at "Muntham" Station in the 1850s. He married Ann WHITE at Heywood in 1856 and they had the following children: Thomas (1857 Muntham), George (1859 Muntham), James (1861 Muntham), William (1863 Muntham), Ann (1865 Sandford), Elizabeth (1868), Joseph (1870 Sandford), Mary Jane (1872 Sandford), Henry (1876 Sandford), Francis (1878 Sandford).
JAMES : Samuel JAMES 1795-1865 was a servant of Edward HENTY's at "Muntham" Station from 1837-1865. He came with Edward HENTY to Portland Bay in 1834 from Van Diemen's Land and never left his employment. He died at "Muntham" in 1865 in his 70th year and left a will in which he stated he was from Liskeard, Cornwall, named 3 children - John, Maryanne & Anne JAMES and 3 brothers - John, William & Benjamin JAMES.
JELBERT : Joseph JELBART (1815-1901) and his wife Joyce PHILLIPS was a storekeeper at Carapook and his family were involved in blacksmithing. Their children were - Joseph, John Phillips (blacksmith at Carapook), Thomas, Everard Viges, Francis, Joyce Ann, & Charles Edmund. Members of this family moved north to the Natimuk and Goroke areas in Victoria, as well as to Ballarat.
JENNINGS : Joseph (Jonas) JENNINGS (1823-1895), a carrier of Carapook, had his signature on the 1875 Carapook School petition and map showing 5 school-aged children, living 1 mile NE of Carapook. He married mary HUTCINS in 1854 and they had the following children - Ann, Elizabeth, William, Mary Ann, Charlotte & Margaret. Mary died in 1863 and Joseph then married Isabella McKINNON in 1866 and they had the following children - Catherine, Jessie, Donald Frank & Sarah Ann.
JENNINGS : Catherine 'Kate' JENNINGS (1867-1949), daughter of Joseph JENNINGS had a daughter Isabella, born at Carapook in 1889. Catherine married George WELCH in 1890 and they had a large family. Isabella JENNINGS (1889-1923) married Frank Higgins VOCE (1889-1982) in 1910. Frank had been born in Coleraine and won an MM in WW1 when serving with the 14th Battalion AIF. Frank and Isabella had one son, Frank, born in Coleraine before Isabella died in 1913 aged 24.
JOHNS : Richard JOHNS (1835-1905) & Susannah EDMONDS (1841-1902) arrived from South Australia in the early 1860s and were having children at Bruk Bruk befoe moving north to Harrow and Clear Lake in the 1870s.
JOHNSON : Abraham JOHNSON (1831-1921) had a signature on the 1875 Carapook School petition and the map showed 2 school-aged children, living 2 miles SW of Carapook. Abraham JOHNSON who was married to Julia Anna HOLZGREFE in 1869 at "Muntham", paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £142.
JULIEN : Richard Charles JULIEN (~1865-1932) son of Richard JULIEN and Clarissa Elisa PENNY, had siblings born at Geelong in 1871-72. He was recorded as a shearer's engine driver of Carapook, when he married Fanny Jane PEDEN 1865-1930, eldest daughter of Robert James PEDEN, in 1917 at Casterton. He died in Geelong in 1932.
KEATS : Joseph KEATS 1835-1921, b. Somerset, England son of Benjamin KEATS and Johanna HUTCHINS; d. melbourne, Victoria; married in 1857 in Belfast (now Port Fairy), Victoria to Emma BOWYER 1840-1917, b. Plymouth, Devonshire, England to Benjamin BOWYER and Mary Ann COOPER; d. Melbourne, Victoria. This couple had two children at "Muntham" Station or in the Casterton area in 1860 and 1862 before returning to the Port Fairy area by 1863.
KENT : Michael Joseph KENT (1855-1918) son of Walter KENT and Mary FANNING, born Kilkenny, Ireland worked at "Muntham" as a fencer and Wool Presser. He married Nora O'BRIEN in 1881 at Casterton and had the following family - Maria, Barry, Eileen, Esmond, Leonnie, Kathleen & Esmond
KILLEEN : John KILLEEN (~1802-1881), b. Ireland, son of William KILLEEN and Honora COSGROVE, married 1847, Ireland to Ellen TIERNEY (~1816-1900). John KILLEEN (40), his wife Ellen TIERNEY (36) and children Bridget (15), William (5), Patrick (3), & Bridget (infant), sailed on the ship "Runnymede" from England and arrived at Melbourne, Colony of Victoria in June 1852. They were settled on "Muntham" Station, near Sandford before 1857 and three more children were born at or near "Muntham."
KILLEEN : Patrick KILLEEN (~1813-1896) b. Co Clare, Ireland, son of William KILLEEN and Honora COSGROVE, married Mary HICKEY, b.~1820, Co Clare, Ieland and six children, sailed on the ship "Victory" from England and arrived at Melbourne, Colony of Victoria in November 1857. They were settled on "Muntham" Station, near Sandford before and two more children were born on the station. The family moved to Queensland after 1869 where Patrick and Ellen died in 1896 and 1903 respectively
KING : Charles McArthur KING, Manager of "Muntham" Station, had a signature on the 1875 Carapook School petition. Charles KING was son of Admiral Philip KING, grandson of Governor KING, the 3rd Governor of the Colony of NSW. Charles KING later became Police Magistrate at Bourke, NSW and Chief Magistrate on Norfolk Island. Charles KING married Jane WILSON in NSW in 1855 and they had a number of children born at "Muntham" Station.
KINGHORN : Alexander "Sandy" KINGHORN (1846-1917), from Haddington, Scotland married Isabella BETHUNE from Inverness, Scotland and was at Carapook in 1870.
KNIGHT : James KNIGHT (c1831- ? ) b. c.1831 Somersetshire, England, son of George KNIGHT & Harriet ___ arrived at Portland, Australia on the "Tasmania" in 1851, aged 20 years. He was employed by Edward Henty of "Muntham Station" for 6 months with rations.
KOCH : Charles Joseph KOCH (c1840-1900) paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £328.
KOOK : Herman KOOK (Snr.) 1807-1887 paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £64.
KRONKE : Richard KRONKE (1832-1865), b. Germany; servant, Mount Gambier, land selector at "Muntham" in 1865, died (suicide) at a Splitter's Camp in the Digby Forest in Sep 1865.
LAIRD : William LAIRD (~1867-1957), was born at Raphoe, Co Donegal, Ireland, son of Francis LAIRD & Annie KILPATRICK. He arrived (with others from the same village in Ireland) in Victoria, Australia in 1891. He married Annie RUSSELL (~1865-1928) in 1896 and they had 4 children (Francis, Ida, Annie & William) in the Merino & Casterton area. In 1915 William was noted as a farmer of Carapook. His wife Annie died at Casterton in 1928. William and his daughter Ida died near Sunbury, Melbourne and are buried in the Bulla cemetery. His daughter Annie married Sydney James GROVES 1904-1982 and moved to Western Australia.
LAIRD : Francis "Frank" LAIRD (1897-1983), born Merino, S-W Victoria, son of William LAIRD & Annie RUSSELL. He married Matilda Mary GOODWIN (1905-1969) in 1926 and they had 3 daughters. In 1932 Frank was noted as a farmer of from near "Tulse Hill" Carapook. By 1942 the family had moved to Portland where Frank died in 1983 and Matilda in 1969.
LANDER : Edward LANDER (1811-1895) and his wife Mary Ann SIMPSON had a large family and emigrated from Calais (from whence they had settled after moving from Nottingham in the early 1840s) to South Australia in 1848 aboard the "Harpley". Some of their children moved across to the Carapook area of western Victoria. Rosina LANDER (1843-1933) was married to Thomas TEMPLETON. Her sister Clara LANDER (1845-1936) was married to Robert CHAPMAN. Both families had children born at Carapook or Muntham. John Hudden LANDER (1837-1927), their brother, married Eliza KOOK, the daughter of Herman KOOK Snr. (immediately above) who also had family in the area. This LANDER family is linked to the Lacemakers of Calais for which there is an external web site to the Australian Society of the Lacemakers of Calais. The Honorary Secretary being Richard LANDER, a descendant from this family group.
LAWFORD : John LAWFORD 1811-1880 married his second wife Mary O'REILLY 1818-1880 in 1868 at "Pleasant Banks," Carapook. The family appears to have lived at Sandford and Harrow.
LAWLOR : Ambrose Augustus LAWLOR (1873-1927), was born at Nirranda, near Warrnambool, son of Michael LAWLOR and Bridget CARMODY. When Ambrose married Ellen Lucy FITZGERALD daughter of Thomas FITZGERALD and Mary HEENAN, from Coleraine in 1904 he was listed as being from "Muntham". Ambrose and Ellen had the following children - Thomas & Mary Veronica LAWLOR b. Hamilton.
LEWIS : Thomas LEWIS (c1809-1874) was married to Rebecca BRAHAM in 1842 at Green ponds, Tasmania. He and Rebecca left Tasmania, and landed at Portland, Victoria where they made their way to Mr Henty's property, "Muntham" Station. During the following years they moved from there to the Henty property at "Merino Downs", then to Sandford, and finally to Bahgallah.
LEY : Charles Arthur LEY (1860-1943), son of Ernest James LEY and Louisa Charlotte CHART was married in 1885 to Annie COTTER (1864-1949), daughter of Michael COTTER and Catherine McINTOSH of Carapook. Charles and Annie LEY lived at Carapook and had the following children; Ernest James LEY (1886-1972), Donald Alexander LEY (1887-1954), Louisa Daphne LEY (1890- ? ), Catherine Nancy LEY (1906 - ? ), Thomas Vincent LEY (1908-1962).
LIGHT : Edward LIGHT 1827-1872, b. London, England; d. Cavendish, Victoria; married in 1853 in Coleraine, Victoria to Isabella McFADYEN c.1832-1917, b. Argyllshire, Scotland to Alan McFADYEN and ..."...; d. Melbourne, Victoria. This couple had a child at "Muntham" Station, near Carapook, Victoria in 1854 before moving on to the Cavendish area.
LILLEY : Daisy LILLEY (1898- ? ) born at Creswick in 1898, daughter of Samuel LILLEY and Sarah ARGYLE. Daisy LILLEY was the teacher at Carapook School No 1969 ca 1916-1918 and boarded with the POVEY family. She later married a __?__ PYERS.
LITTLE : Andrew LITTLE (1833-1913) paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £12. Andrew LITTLE was married to Mary CREGAN in 1859 and had six children between 1859 and 1869.
LORIMER : Joseph LORIMER (~1845-1875) was born ~1845 at Adelaide, Colony of SA. In May 1876, Joseph LORIMER, a swagman, aged 30y, attempted suicide at 'Muntham" station. He was aptched up and sent to Hamilton hospital where he died from the effects of his wounds 3 days later.
LOUGHRAN : Peter LOUGHRAN (ca 1834- ? ) married Mary CUSH in Ireland in 1855 and they appear to have had some of their children at Carapook. This made him a brother-in-law of Christoph LUERS who was married to Mary's sister Isabella CUSH.
LUERS : Christoph LUERS (1834-1905) was married to Isabella CUSH. He was listed as a farmer of Carapook, with a signature on 1875 Carapook School petition and map which showed 5 school-aged children, living 1 mile ESE of Carapook.
MALING : Israel MALING (1825-1887), and his wife Mary Ann HOUGHTON from Cambridge, England arrived on the "Eliza" at Portland in 1853, settled in the Merino area and one son is shown to have been born at Muntham. Their family was Harriet, George William, Priscilla, Grace, Mary Ann, Robert (b. 1859, Muntham), Amelia, Israel, Henry, Matilda & Martha Ellen.
MALLETT : James MALLETT (1834-1901), was born in Tasmania and came to Portland in 1845. He worked at "Muntham" Station during the 1840's and 1850's and later settled in Merino. James married Eliza Sarah SEABORN in 1856 and they had the following family - Mary Jane, Ann, Lucy, William Thomas, George Seaborn, Ernest, Ada Eliza, James Henry, Herbert Robert & Martha Amy. MARONEY / MAHONEY ? : P. MARONEY / MAHONEY ? owned a block of land at the bottom of the 'Bella Vista' Hill at Carapook in 1874, west of the Carapook settlement. [NOTE: Cannot identify this individual at this time, it may have been Patrick MAHONEY who was a farmer near Coleraine at this time.]
MARSH : Thomas MARSH (1830-1908) from Norfolk, England was married to Maria LOCK in 1853. Thomas was a labourer of Bruk Bruk and had a signature on the 1875 Carapook School petition and the map showed 4 school-aged children, living 2 miles NW of Carapook.
MARSHALL : Reuben Augustus MARSHALL (1894-1938). b. 1894 Tasmania, labourer of Hamilton, Vic., in 1916 and served with the 8th Light Horse Regiment, 1st AIF in Palestine. He married Gladys May BAWDEN in 1919 and lived at Carapook in the 1920s & '30s. Reuben is in the Carapook Football team photograph of 1921. They had the following children - Edward, Greta, Kerin, Thomas and Kaye.
MARSHALL : William Enoch MARSHALL (1874-1962), b. 1874 Tasmania, married Emily Adelaide Louise SUMMERS in 1896 in Tasmania and were at Carapook in the 1918. They had the following children - Reuben, William ivy, Amelia, Christina, Edith Alma and Elizabeth.
MARTIN : Angus MARTIN (1804-1864) and his wife Margaret McLEOD were the parents of Angus & Archibald MARTIN who are named as landowners of joining allotments north east of Carapook in the Parish of Bruk Bruk in the 1860s. Their land joins the allotment of J DOUGHENEY which indicates that Angus (1845-1905) and Archibald MARTIN (1841-1897) were likely to be the brothers of Margaret MARTIN (1835-1921), wife of James DOUGHENEY (1832-1875) from Carapook. The brothers Angus & Archibald both died in NSW.
MATHIESON : Alexander Duncan MATHIESON (1890-1918) born Hanmer Springs, Canterbury, New Zealand, son of Alexander MATHIESON 1843-1911 and Jessie McARTHUR 1850-1930. Alexander (1843) from Argyllshire, had been a farmer and Wannon Shire Councillor when he farmed at "Kilberry" Coleraine from about 1865 when he arrived from Scotland, to 1889 when he went to New Zealand and married Jessie McARTHUR, whose brother Duncan McARTHUR 1849-1932 was a farmer at "Felton" Carapook around 1910-1920.
Alexander Duncan MATHIESON served in WW1 with the Canterbury Infantry Battalion, N.Z.E.F. and was either wounded or suffered severe illness while on service. He died from the effects of war service in 1918 at the Hamilton Hospital, S-W Victoria, with his place of abode listed as Carapook which will make him the A. MATHIESON on the Carapook WW1 Honour Roll.
McARTHUR : Duncan McARTHUR (1849-1932) born Argyllshire, Scotland, son of John McARTHUR and Isabella McMURRICK 1889 married Elizabeth Jessie McCORKINDALE of Nareen, Victoria in 1877. They went to New Zealand after their marriage and spent 10 years at Maffra, Gippsland after returning from New Zealand. By 1910 he was a farmer at "Felton" Carapook. Duncan McARTHUR's wife died at Hamilton in 1903 and Duncan died there in 1932, and both are buried in the Hamilton Cemetery.
McARTHUR : Peter McARTHUR (1806-1892) from Kintra, Isle of Mull arrived at Portland on the "Marmion" in 1852 with his third wife and 11 children and proceeded to Mt Gambier in South Australia. His three eldest sons, John, Archibald and Dugald were all engaged by Edward HENTY of "Muntham" Station for 12 months.
McBEAN : William McBEAN (Snr) (1808-1891) had a signature on an 1865 letter from Bruk Bruk School Committee. This appears to be the family of William McBEAN and wife Ann ROBERTSON, who married in 1833, Perth, Scotland and had the following family - Ann, Ann, William, Alexander, John, Helen & Eliza. His son William was a teacher at Carapook Common School. The family moved north to the Minimay & Goroke area.
McBEAN : William McBEAN (Jnr) (1840-1915) son of William McBEAN (Snr) and Ann ROBERTSON, born ~1840 Scotland. William was a teacher at Carapook Common School and he married Mary Ann SMITH in 1876 and had the following family - William Cadell, Eliza Grant, Alexander Hugh, Isabella Ann, James Donald, Achina May, Georgina Margaret, Anne Isabella, John Robertson & Charles Allan. The family moved north to the Minimay & Goroke area. William's obituary appeared in the West Wimmera Mail of 9 Jul 1915.
McCAHILL : Hugh McCAHILL 1827-1869, b. Co Cavan, Ireland, convict to Van Diemen's Land in 1841, butcher at Portland Bay, married in 1851 to Mary KENNY 1836-1883 in Portland, employee of Edward HENTY at "Muntham," died at Carapook in 1869. Mary McCAHILL (1836-1883) of Carapook, had a signature on the 1875 Carapook School petition and map which showed 3 school-aged children, living 1 mile SW of Carapook. This was probably Mary KENNY, widow of Hugh McCAHILL. One of their daughters Catherine McCAHILL from Carapook married Robert NEAVE and had the "Royal Oak" Hotel at Tarrayoukyan. Robert was a son of William NEAVE (1816-1887) and Hannah WILLIAMS (1818-1892) who arrived at Portland in 1855 with four children and settled in the Nareen & Harrow area.
McCALLUM : James McCALLUM (1842-1911), b. Inverary, Argyllshire, Scotland, son of Duncan McCALLUM and Mary McCALLUM, arrived at Point Henry, Geelong in 1851 on the "Statesman" aged 13y, along with his parents and siblings. He appears to have been at "Ardno West" Station, Starthdownie by 1866, which at that time was operated by Edward McCALLUM. It appears James became a selector just over the SA border at Mingbool and later became manager of "Kaladbro" just on the Victorian side of the border. Prior to 1907 James purchased a 476 acre property at Carapook named "Redcliffe" adjoining the Carapook township, part of the original "Muntham" Station. He appears to have leased this property in 1907 and retired with his wife and daughter to Melbourne where he died in 1911. This property was put up for auction in 1921 as a part of his estate after his widow's death in Melbourne.

McCALLUM : Norman McCALLUM (1905-1968), b. Digby, son of John "Jack" McCALLUM and Ann BARKER lived at Carapook. His sister Lucy McCallum (1901-1969) married Ern POVEY (1898-1965) and they lived at Carapook in the POVEY House before moving to Portland in the 1940s.
McCLURE : James McCLURE (1843-1914) and his wife Margaret McLACHLAN lived at Carapook where their first children were born ca 1866-1872. Later the moved north around the Natimuk area. Their family was - Annie b. 1886, Muntham, John b. 1867 Muntham, Jane b. 1870, Muntham, Donald Lewis, Sarah, Lily Ann, Hugh, Robert Glasgow, Mary Annabella & David.
McCREDDEN : John McCREDDEN (1833-1904), and his wife Margaret McCLURE (1841-1930), sister of John McCLURE (above) lived at "Muntham" Station in the early 1870s where a couple of their children were born. Later the moved north around the Natimuk area. Their known family was - John b. 1859, Wangoom, Jane Eliza b. 1861 Allansford, Mary b. 1863, Allansford, Matthew b. 1864 Mepunga, Ann b. 1868 Allansford, Catherine b. 1871 "Muntham", Margaret b. 1873 Casterton, Lillian b. 1876, David b. 1878 Natimuk, Ethel Maud b. 1880 Natimuk, Leila Wilton b. 1883 Natimuk & Gertrude May b. 1885 Wimmera.
McDONALD : Dugald McDONALD (1828-1889) paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £80. Appears to be the Dugald McDONALD from Nairnshire, Scotland, brother of John McDONALD, Head Teacher at Coleraine SS who inherited "Bella Vista" at Carapook.
McDONALD : George McDONALD paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £318. This may be the George McDONALD who had no children and from whom John McDONALD inherited "Bella Vista" at Carapook
McDONALD : John McDONALD (1819-1885) had a signature on the 1875 Carapook School petition and map showed 1 school-aged child, living 1 mile SW of Carapook. John was the Head Teacher at Coleraine SS and inherited "Bella Vista" at Carapook. John's son Norman McDonald became acting professor of Veterinary Science at Melbourne University, landed at Gallipoli on 25 Apr 1915 as Capt McDONALD. He was decorated [MID], promoted to Major and returned to Carapook where he served the community with distinction. He was fondly referred to as "The Major".
McDONNELL : John McDONNELL b. 1856, Carapook, son of Patrick McDONNELL (below), married Catherine COLEMAN in 1884. John was a brother of William James McDONNELL (below).
McDONNELL : Patrick McDONNELL (abt 1825-1874) from Co Clare, Ireland, was married in Ireland to Bridget HOURIGAN also from Co Clare, Ireland and had the following family: John, Michael Hourigan, John, William James, Thomas Hourigan, Patrick, Francis, Elizabeth Margaret & a baby. The mother Bridget died at "Munthan" in 1866 and the father, Patrick died at Carapook in 1874.
McDONNELL : William James McDONNELL (1857-1923) son of Patrick McDONNELL above, married Mary Margaret DOYLE in 1878 and they had a number of children born at Carapook. Their family was - James Patrick, b. 1879, Carapook, Mary, William, Elizabeth, John Peter, Gertrude Alicia, Annie Bedilia, Catherine & Margaret Frances.
McEACHERN : Alexander McLean McEACHERN (1868-1945) was born at the "Rising Sun Hotel" Hotspur in 1868 to John "Long John" McEACHERN and Annie McLEAN. He grew up at Hotspur and Nelson in the south-west corner of Victoria. In 1903 he married Catherine Jane McFARLANE, daughter of Alexander Campbell McFARLANE and Ann McLEAN. Alexander & Catherine McEACHERN had land at Carapook from 1905-1908 when they moved to Port Fairy, much later to Mount Gambier and to Adelaide. Their children born in the period 1904 to 1908 were Alistair Campbell, Morven and Annie McLean McEACHERN .
McEVOY : Thomas McEVOY (1835-1909) was the Police Constable at Digby in the 1860's. He married Elizabeth HAWKINS in 1865 and also lived at Bahgallah. Some of his children were born at Carapook and his family was - David Thomas, Julia Elizabeth, Alice, Beatrice Florence (b. 1873, Carapook), Ellen, Charlotte Ennis and Edith Margaret. Thomas McEVOY paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £57.
McEWAN : James McEWAN (1834-1870) married Ann SMALL in 1856, Ireland. James was a shepherd on "Muntham" Station and became a selector on "Satimer" Station. James and Ann had the following family, a number of whom appear to have been born at "Muntham" Station - William, Mary Jane, Michael, James (b. 1863, Muntham, d. 1875), Edward, Sarah Ann, Agnes Mary & Francis. James was killed in a farming accident on his property at Satimer in 1870, leaving a widow and young family.
McFARLANE : Peter McFARLANE 1857-1904, b. Ardno, Starthdownie, son of Andrew McFARLANE & Janet McNICOL from Perthsh ire & Argyllshire, Scotland. Peter was the managing Partner of "McFARLANE Bros" Stock Dealers and graziers of "Blumesbury" Carapook and Ardno, Strathdownie, advertised their second annual clearing sale in November 1888, at "Blumesbury" located at eight miles from Casterton, three miles from Sandford, and nine miles from Coleraine.
McGRATH : James McGRATH (1827-1898) b. 1827 Co Clare, Ireland, son of Michael McGRATH & Ann BRADY, m. 1855, Victoria to Johanna MULCAHY (1840-1918), b. Co Tipperary, Ireland, daughter of John MULCAHY & Mary BOURKE. James McGRATH was the overseer at "Muntham" station for many years in the 1860s & 1870s. He became a farmer at Bahgallah for many years in the 1880s and then moved to Strathdownie where he died in 1898 and was buried in the Strathdownie cemetery. Johanna died at Strathdownie in 1918 and was also buried in the Strathdownie cemetery. Children born from 1857-1891 were - Michael, Mary, John, Thomas, Annie, Alice, James, James, Joseph, William, Geoffrey & Eileen. Some of the children went to Western Australia.
McKAY : Catherine Mary McKAY (1829-1908) was a governess at "Muntham" Station prior to her marriage at Ballarat in 1855 to David McFADYEN. Catherine had arrived at Portland in 1852 on the 'Dominion'.

McKENZIE : Nathaniel McKENZIE (ca 1845-1935) b. Belfast, Port Phillip District, m. 1871 to Mary Ann COOKE 1844-1898. Nathaniel signed the 1875 Carapook School petition and the map showed 2 school-aged children, living 1 mile S of Carapook. Later the family moved north to Gymbowen & Quantong wher he married again to Rebecca FEATHERBY 1866-1923.
McKENZIE : William McKENZIE 1865-1928, b. Stockyard Hill, Victoria to Donald McKENZIE & Rosanna BUSH ; Station employee at "Muntham" Carapook in the 1880s (his brother John was manager) ; "Struan" near Naracoorte, SA ; Killanoola, near Naracoorte, SA, d. Naracoorte, SA ; m. 1893 to Annie Bridget MILLIGAN 1871-..?.., b. Purdeet, near Penshust, Victoria ; d. ...?.... ; 6 children at Penshust, Victoria 1894-1905, before moving to South Australia.

Melbourne, Victoria, m. 1903 Mount Gambier, S.A. to Catherine BUCKINGHAM 1887-1980, b. South Australia, children in S.A. and Carapook, Victoria, d. Melbourne, Victoria.

McKINNON : Hector Malcolm McKINNON was b. 1877, at "Mingbool" Station, South Australia son of Malcolm McKINNON and Mary Margaret McCALLUM. He owned "Muntham" Station and is listed on the Carapook WW1 Honour Roll. Hector McKINNON is probably the H. McKINNON from Strathdownie who served in the Boer War
McLACHLAN : Alexander McLACHLAN c.1846-1929, son of Donald McLACHLAN and Ann McDONALD arrived at Portland in 1854 with his parents and siblings. The obituary of his brother-in-law Donald McRAE provided the following link with "Muntham" - Leaving Inverness where he [Donald McRAE] was born in 1842, with his parents, when he was about 10 years of age, he came to Australia, landing at Portland. Up till 1865 he was employed on station work, after which time he and his brother-in-law (Mr. Alex McLACHLAN), became partners in a farm at Muntham near Hamilton. Not meeting with much success, they, in 1872, went to the Arapiles district and selected 320 acres each. After the dissolution of this partnership 7 years later he became a larger land holder acquiring over 1000 acres at Tooan, and of late years he was very successful as a wheat grower and grazier.
Alexander McLACHLAN married Catherine McRAE in 1879 and they had the following family - Jessie Ann, Donald Lewis, Alexander Ewen, John Cumming, Lilian, Kenneth Duncan, Peter Francis & Catherine.
McLACHLAN : John McLACHLAN 1859-1918, b. Digby, S-W Victoria, son of son of Peter McLACHLAN & Janet "Jessie" McKINNON, of Carapook in 1918, died in the Portland hospital in December 1918.
McLAUGHLIN : James McLAUGHLIN 1861-1912, from Co Tyrone, Ireland, married Mary McFARLANE 1875-1933, was a farmer on one of the "Muntham" Estate blocks 1902-1912. Three sons, Dugald, James Ronald & John MYLES were born before there father died at Muntham in 1912.
McLELLAN : James A McLELLAN 1830-1898, b. Ireland, son of ___, m. in 1856, S-W Vic., to Bridget KILLEEN 1837-1923, ch'n at Coleraine, "Muntham" & Sandford 1857-1876, buried Sandford. James McLELLAN's a ddress was "Muntham" when in 1859 he advertised for a lost or stolen mare.
McLENNAN : John McLENNAN paid rates of £12 in 1875 on a Carapook property.
McLENNAN : Farquhar McLENNAN (1838-1908) paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £115. This is probably the Farquhar McLENNAN of Sandford who married Rebecca MATHESON (1846-1929) and had the following family - Cecelia, Donald, Mary, Duncan, Catherine, Isabella, Rebecca & Ann from 1870 to 1886.
McNICOL : Duncan Archibald McNICOL (1877-1955), son of John McNICOL and Ann McLEOD, Grazier of "Blackwood" and "Phoines" at Carapook in the early 1900's. A number of the POVEY boys from Carapook worked for Duncan McNICOL at "Phoines", including Alan who worked there for 32 years. Duncan was married to Elizabeth Jessie McARTHUR and they had 4 children - John, Archie, Margaret & Joan.
McPHEE : Donald McPHEE (1794-1854), and his wife Mary McINNES arrived at Portland in Dec 1852 on the "Marmion". Upon arrival, their sons Neil, Hector, Alexander and Angus McPHEE, were engaged by Edward HENTY of "Muntham" Station.
McPHERSON : John Russell McPHERSON (1832-1905), b. 1832 Kingussie, Scotland, son of Duncan McPHERSON and Georgina McKINNON. J.R. McPHERSON paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £595. This was the John Russell McPHERSON who owned "Phoines" Pastoral Run at Carapook.
McPHERSON : Robert George "Old Sydney" McPHERSON (~183-1885), b. ~1830 ___, Scotland, son of John McPHERSON and Marion McKAY. He married Susannah LANNIN, b. ~1833 ___, daughter of N___LANNIN & Eliza JARMAN in Victoria in 1854. Robert was the sheep manager for Edward HENTY on "Muntham" station 1859-60 and later moved to Edenhope where both he and his wife died. They had eight children in the area from 1855-1876.

MEATYARD : Charles MEATYARD c.1845-1917, b. England; 1872 selector of 320 acres in Bruk Bruk parish; 1877 of Turkey Bottom, Carapook, he sustained a severe loss with the total destruction by fire of his house and everything it contained on 15th August 1877; appears to have moved to Queensland; d. 1917 at St George, near Roma, Queensland. Possibly related to Mrs William VALE of "Tulse Hill" who was Martha MEATYARD prior to her 1853 marriage.
MELLOR : Thomas MELLOR c.1791-1866 died at "Muntham Station" in 1866, age 85y. The "Hamilton Spectator" recorded his death details as... "in the 86th year of his age, Thomas Mellor, an old and faithful servant of Edward HENTY, Esq. Arrived in the Second Fleet in 1805". NOTE - 1805 is too late to be listed as "Second Fleet", but there was a Thomas MELLOR, convict who arrived at Sydney on the "Fortune & Alexander" in 1806.
MENZIES : John MENZIES (1846-1916) b. Isle of Mull, Scotland and arrived with his family in Portland in 1852, aged 6y. John was a blacksmith of Carapook in 1875 when he signed the Carapook School petition, but his residential location not marked on the map. John MENZIES had married Elizabeth LOWE in 1870 at Casterton and they had a large family from 1872 to 1896. The family appears to have moved to Mount Gambier, South Australia in the 1880s where more children were born.
MILBURN : William MILBURN (1838-1918) a Farmer of Bruk Bruk, had a signature on 1875 Carapook School petition and the map showed 4 school-aged children, living 1 mile N of Carapook. William MILBURN paid rates in 1875 on a Bruk Bruk property valued at £77. Nurse N. MILBURN is listed as an ex-pupil of Carapook School who served as a Nurse in WW1 on the Carapook WW1 Honour Roll.
MILES : John MILES (1834-1905) b. 1834 Ferring, Sussex, England came out in a HENTY family ship bringing sheep to Edward HENTY's "Muntham" Station 60 miles or so north from Portland in Feb. 1856. The HENTYs were from West Tarring, Sussex, England. Their arrivals were :- Swan River Colony (Western Australia), then Launceston, Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) and later to Portland, Port Phillip District (Victoria).

John MILES aged 21 and a half years in a HENTY ship bringing sheep (Merino) out to Lanceston TAS. & Portland, VIC, AUS. Is it possible for someone please to lookup the passenger listing of John MILES aboard one of the HENTY's ships?

MOLLOY : Lawrence MOLLOY (1840-1881) a farmer of Carapook, had a signature on the 1875 Carapook School petition and map showed 3 school-aged children, living 1 mile NW of Carapook. Lawrence paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £32.
MOTT : Alexander MOTT (1862-1934) from Tantanoola, South Australia moved in ~1905 to Carapook as a farmer along with is wife Martha Ann HOLLAND 1862-1914 and family of - William George, Henry John Grant, Eleanor Ann Maud, Arthur Edward, Mytrle Emily, Richard Oliver, Louis Stanley, Frederick Nathaniel, Joseph Harold & Victor Alexander MOTT. Alexander later moved to Bahgallah, then Casterton ~1913, where he remained until his death in 1934. His wife Martha predeceased him at Casterton in 1914.
MOYLAN : Thomas MOYLAN (1843-1921) from Clare, Ireland married Mary Ann CARMICHAEL at Carapook in 1868 and they had the following family - George Patrick, Mary, Thomas John, Isabella Carmichael, Elizabeth Carmichael, William James, Margaret Elizabeth, Rhoda Alice, Arthur, Albert Henry, Kathleen Victoria & Esther May. Thomas MOYLAN paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £141.
MURRAY : David Munro MURRAY (1829-1896) from Scotland was Sheep Manager on "Muntham" Station in the 1850s and a Farmer of Bruk Bruk when he signed the 1875 Carapook School petition but the location of his house was not shown on the map with the petition. David Munro Murray married Margaret RYAN in 1852 at "Muntham" Station and they had the following childrem - Mary, Clara, Isabella, David, William, Augustus, George, Medea, Cora, John, Theros & Francis.
MURRAY : John MURRAY 1811-1896, b. Dunbarney, Perthshire, Scotland to Alexander MURRAY and Magdalene HIND (HAYNE), arrived 1849 at Portland, S-W Victoria from V.D.L. with wife and children, at "Runnymede" Stataion, Sandford in the 1860s, "Mordun Hill" near Sandford 1871-76, Darlington Point, NSW 1876-1885, "Burnbank" Estate, Carapook (Muntham) 1888-1895, paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £128, died 1896, Carapook, S-W Victoria, m. 1844, Perthshire, Scotland to Christian HUTCHESON 1820-1900, b. Perthshire, Scotland, d. Carapook, S-W Victoria. They had the following family : Alexander, Isabella, David, George & Ellen.
MURRAY : Robert MURRAY (c.1888- ? ) b. Barking, Essex, England was employed by the STOCK Bros. at "Phoines" Carapook when he enlisted in the 1st AIF in May 1916. He served in the 59th & 38th Battalions, AIF and was welcomed back to Casterton in March 1918 after being wounded in France. Robert MURRAY is probably the R. Murray listed on the Carapook WW1 Honour Roll. After the war Robert MURRAY...............?
MURTAGH : Walter MURTAGH (1800-1865), from Co Meath, Ireland, married to Bridget MOYLES, arrived in western Victoria from Tasmania between 1845 and 1849. Walter first worked for the HENTY family at "Muntham" Station before settling in Coleraine. Walter & Bridget MURTAGH had the following known family - Marcella (1835), Katherine (1838), William (c1839), Maria (c1843), Edward (c1845), Patrick (c1845) & James (1849).
NASH : Denis NASH (1835-1903), from Co Clare, Ireland married Emily Miles SPICER (1839-1883) from Dorset, England at Penola, South Australia in 1856. Denis NASH was a member of the 1863 Glenelg Shire Council and his signature is on an 1865 letter from the Bruk Bruk School Committee. They had a number of children born at Carapook in the 1860s & 1870s and their known family was - Thomas A, Nicholas, William Michael, Annie May, Mary, Emily Catherine, Florence, Ellen Norah, Frances Jane, John Patrick, Eugene D, Grace Geraldine & Henry M. They family moved north to Deniliquin in the Riverina District of NSW in the early 1870s where Denis had a farm known as "Pine Grove".
NEALL : Samuel NEALL (ca 1820-1886) paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £20. This appears to be the Samuel NEALL who married Charlotte CURL (ca 1820-1904) and had the following family - Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Martha, Maria, Zacharia, Leah & Charlotte.
NICHOLLS : John Thomas NICHOLLS (1831-1888) from Cornwall, England was a storekeeper & Carpenter who worked at "Muntham" Station before moving to Sandford with his wife Elizabeth TALLACK and family of - Mary Emma, John Francis (b. 1856, Muntham), Thomas Henry, Elizabeth Jane, William James, Harriet Hannah, Phillipa Tallack & Emily.
NICKOLL : Henry NICKOLL (1831-1913), from Kent, England was the storekeeper at "Muntham" in the 1850s & 1860s before moving to Coleraine where he took over the lease of the "Coleraine Hotel" and later the "Koroite Inn". Henry NICKOLL married in 1857 at Portland to Lilias SUTHERLAND from Perthshire, Scotland and they had the following family - Mary, Emily, Margaret, Henry, Clare, Jane, Lilias, Elizabeth & John.
NICHOLSON : Christina NICHOLSON (~1837-1922) was recorded as a spinster, aged 29y, of "Tulse Hill" in 1868 when she married Alexander Cameron McBEAN, a 30y old forester of Digby. They had 4 children in S-W Victoria and moved to NSW in 1903 where they both died.
NULTY : Bryan (Bernard) NULTY (1845-1904) paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £7. This is most likely to be Bryan (Bernard) NULTY b. 1845, Co Meath, Ireland, who married Julia Mary MURRAY in 1874 at Sandford and had the following family - Matthew, Matthew John, Patrick, Catherine, Edward, Bernard & Julia from 1875 to 1884.
O'BREE : Henry O'BREE (1828-1901), married Frances PIERPOINT in Liverpool, Engalnd, arrived in Geelong in 1858 and lived in the Muntham / Carapook area in the 1860's where some of their family was born. Their family was - Frederick George, Henry, William (b. 1862 Muntham), Henry Phineas, Susan Maria, John, Philip (b. 1870, Muntham or Bruk Bruk), Patrick, Lawrence, Joseph & Robert. The family moved north to around Natimuk with many descendants finishing up in northern Victoria around Swan Hill.
O'BRIEN : John O'BRIEN (~1823-1870) & Margaret O'BRIEN (~1835-1915) were married in Cork, Ireland in 1855 and lived at Muntham after arrival in Victoria. Their known family was - Thomas (b. 1854, Muntham), John (b. 1861), James (b. 1864, Muntham), Cornelius (b. 1866, Muntham), Thomas (b. 1866) & Mary Ann (b. 1868, Muntham).
O'BRIEN : Joseph O'BRIEN 1869-1938, b. Branxholme, Victoria to Joseph Richard O'BRIEN and Christina McPHERSON; dairy farmer at Talisker Estate and Paschendale Estate, Merino, Victoria; served in WW1 as Pte 927, 24th Battalion, AIF; d. Hamilton, Victoria; married Isabella "Bella" HART 1871-1922 at Carapook in 1892 and they had the following family - Florence Isabella, James Dougald, Christina, William Joseph, John Stanley, Gordon, Rellan Charles, Lillian Chas, Joseph Murray, Lindsay & Margaret "Maggie."
O'FARRELL : Catherine O'FARRELL (c1826-?), arrived at Portland on the ship "New Zealander" from Liverpool in November 1853 and was employed by Edward HENTY of "Muntham" on 3 Dec 1853 for 3 months at a rate of 25 pounds and .................
O'GORMAN : Thomas O'GORMAN (1832-1912) born County Clare, Ireland ca 1832, married Margaret GRIFFIN and they had one daughter, Mary Ann, b. 1879, d. 1897. Thomas worked for Edward WHITE of "Den Hills" and had a cottage at Carapook where he died in 1912 aged 80 years and was buried at Coleraine. Thomas witnessed the start of the Burke & Wills expedition from Melbourne and accompanied it as far as Kilmore.
O'NEIL : Michael O'NEIL (1831-1904), from Co Wicklow, Ireland arrived in Victoria in 1860 with his wife Mary NOLAN and infant daughter. He settled at "Muntham", later owned land at Spring Vale and later moved to Coleraine. Michael O'NEIL and Mary NOLAN had the following family - Margaret Lucy, James Patrick, Michael (b. 1864, "Muntham"), Lucy, Stephen Joseph and John Joseph.
O'ROURKE : Eugene O'ROURKE 1856-1893, b. ~1856 Beaufort, Victoria, son of John O'ROURKE & Ellen O'SULLIVAN married Margaret McFARLANE, b. 1856 Scotland, daughter of Peter Campbell McFARLANE and Margaret STEWART. Eugene was a Grazier of "Blumesbury" Carapook when he advertised a clearing sale in June 1888, at "Blumesbury" as he was leaving the district.
OWENS : John OWENS (1860-1936), son of Joseph OWENS & Rachel GARDINER, married Emily FRANKLIN in 1887 at Fitzroy after the death of his first wife Elizabeth HILLIER. Their children were born in Melbourne and the family moved to Carapook in the early 1900's. Their family was - Bertie August, Thomas Henry, Olive Emily Mary (married George Thomas POVEY), William Alfred, Richard Ernest, Ellen Ruby, Edward Alexander, Myrtle Ivy, Erica Francis. William Alfred OWENS is listed on the Carapook WW1 Honour Roll.
PAYNE : John PAYNE (c.1832-?), a 19y old groom from Somersetshire, was on board the "Priam" when it arrived at Portland in 1852 and he was employed by Edward HENTY for 12 months. He may have been a brother of Ann PAYNE, aged 25y who was the wife of James TEMPLAR, an Agricultural Labourer who along with his family arrived on the "Priam" in 1852 and was engaged by Edward HENTY of "Muntham Station".
PEARCE : William PEARCE (1820-1882) from Kent, England and his wife Anna WATTS (1837-1896) from Norfolk, England lived on the property "Paradise Farm" east of the Carapook township from about 1870. William & ann PEARCE had the following family - Louisa, Frances, Emma, Edith, Charles, Frederick, Herbert, Basil, Alice & John.
PEARSON : Joseph Johnson Bell PEARSON (1840-1922), son John PEARSON and Mary SIMPSON leased "Muntham" Estate from the HENTY family about 1880. He married Mary Holdich ABBOTT at Ballarat in 1877 and so became a brother-in-law of George Elias BUTLER who was also grazing on land at Muntham in the early 1880s.
PENROSE : Thomas Matthews PENROSE (1802-1883) and his wife Susanna JELBERT (1810-1884) from Cornwall lived on the property "Rosedale" at Carapook. The following PENROSE family members paying rates in 1875 were sons of this couple. Thomas & Susanna PENROSE are buried in the New Casterton Cemetery. Many of their family members moved north from Carapook.

PETERING : Wilhelm Friedrich PETERING (~1847-1922) from Hanover, Germany, son of Franz Heinrich PETERING & Anna Marie Caroline BUGOSSE, married in 1871 at Muntham to Wilhelmina SAWERT (1847-1935) from Hahndorf, South Australia, daughter of Caspar Heinrich SAWERT & Catherine Elizabeth STRATMANN. Their first child was born and died at Carapook, near Muntham in 1872 and another child was born in 1873 before they moved north and settled at Coromby in the Minyip district where another 6 children were born. Wilhelm died at Minyip in 1922 and his wife at Minyip in 1935. Their 8 children were :-- infant girl, Frederick Carl, Anna Maria, Louise Helene, Albert Edward, Alma Katharina, Alfred Herbert & Ernestina Louise.
PITCHER : Aaron PITCHER (1804-1859) from Dorsetshire, England arrived in Victoria in 1849, along with some of his children and was first engaged at "Muntham" Station along with two of his sons. He married Elizabeth PITCHER in 1824 and they had the following known family - Isabella, Mary Ann, John, Ann, Agnes Ellen, Elizabeth, George, Albion, Frances Elizabeth and Albert.
POLAND : William POLAND (~1832-1922) from Co Down, North Ireland married Elizabeth CALVERT ~1831-1912 in 1855, Co Down and arrived at Portland, Victoria in 1856 on the "General Hewett" with an infant born on the voyage out. RADFORD : Caleb RADFORD (1843-1923), was the teacher at Bruk Bruk SChool and later the new school at Carapook from about 1877 - 1883. He was the son of Dr Caleb RADFORD 1813-1888 & Mary Sarah WESTON 1812-1877 of Sandford and he married Maria BOARDMAN in 1880. Mary Sarah RADFORD (nee WESTON) died at Bruk Bruk in 1877. RENNIE : William RENNIE 1889-1958, born Kinell, Arboath, Forfarshire, Scotland, the son of Jemima WILSON, adopted by James RENNIE & Jemima WILSON after their 1891 marriage. William was a step-brother and NOK to Nicoll RENNIE whose address was given as Carapook when he enlisted in WW1 in 1914. William also enlisted in the AIF, served at Gallipoli, the Somme & Flanders. Named on Carapook WW1 Honour Roll as wounded (leg amputated in France. He returned to Scotaland after being discharged as an invalid, married raised a family, was a dairy farmer, and died in Scotland.

RICHARDS : Leslie James RICHARDS 1892-1969, b. Sandford, Vic, son of Edward RICHARD and Elizabeth Esther STOCK is listed on the Carapook WW1 Honour Roll. He served as a Sgt with the 10th Light Horse Regiment, 1st AIF.
ROCHE : Charles ROCHE b. 1874, Maffra, Gippsland, son of Edward ROCHE and Sarah MALONEY was married in 1900 at ____ to Jane "Jeanie" WILLIAMSON, b. 1876 Glenmaggie, Gippsland, daughter of James WILLIAMSON and Jane McKENZIE. This couple had four childrem (Hugh, Gladys, Ivy and Donald). In 1910 Charles ROCHE was employed at "Felton" Carapook by Mr. McARTHUR for 3 years, then employed on two of the "Bella Vista" dairy farms of "Geddes" and "Blackwood" for the next ten years. He purchased his own farm "Brocka" near Casterton and worked it for a number of years before going to the "Nelson Hotel" on the lower Glenelg river as the publican. He retired to Portland about 1938 and died there two years later.

SHANNON : David SHANNON c.1842-1884, from ......... married Deborah Eleanor KELLY c.1846-1912 in 1856 at Tanunda, South Australia. Along with one child they moved fron South Australia to Muntham by 1870. Later in 1870 David was a successful land selector at Dartmoor, and by 1874 the family had moved to Mumbannar, near Dartmoor. David SHAONNON died there in 1884 and Deborah, his widow died near Casterton in 1912 and they are both buried in the Dartmoor cemetery. Their known children were David, Mary Jane, Emma, Charlotte, Richard Thomas, Dinah "Dolly" (who married John Hamilton STARK) and George.
SHAW : William SHAW 1812-1885, b. Co Tipperary, Ireland, son of ___ and ___. In 1840 at Melbourne, Port Phillip, he married Mary JORDAN 1820-1885, born Co Wexford, Ireland, daughter of Peter JORDAN & Mary LENNAN. They had children an Geelong and Belfast and by 1854 were at "Muntham" station where their daughter Bridget Amelia SHAW was born. By 1858 the family had moved to south to Hotspur where their last two children were born. Both parents died in 1885 at Telangatuk, near Balmoral and were buried in the Harrow cemetery.
SIDDERS : William SIDDERS c.1804-1877, born Kent, England and transported to Tasmania as a Kent "Swing Rioter" in 1831. This appears to be the William SIDDERS farmer of Bruk Bruk, named as a landowner in 1871 and paid rates in 1875 on a Bruk Bruk property valued at £40.
SIMMONS : Hezekiah SIMMONS (c1834-1912), b. Kent, England, son of Henry SIMMONS & Sarah WRIGHT, married Lucy WILLIAMS (1844-1904) in South Australia in 1862. By 1863 they were living at Carapook and had the following family of 13 children from 1863-1886 in Victoria, New South Wales & South Australia - Henry, George, Llewellyn, Margaret, Lucy, William, James, Margaret, Lucy, Henry Thomas, Frederick, Henry James & John Hezekiah. Four of the children died of scarlet fever at Carapook in 1873 and were buried in the Sandford Cemetery. Lucy died in NSW in 1904 and Hezekiah in 1912 in NSW.
SMEAD : James SMEAD 1804-1882, b. Kent, Engalnd was a stockman employed by Edward HENTY at "Muntham" in 1843. He was sent with Joseph FROST, another stockman with a mob of cattle and settled the new land at Mount Gambier in 1843. The two stockmen established their camp at Browne's Lake, Mount Gambier, the only source of surface water available at the time in the area. James SMEAD had been a convict transported to Van Diemen's Land in 1827, until pardoned after assisting in the capture of bushrangers in the Colony. He was a member of the original party of Stephen HENTY that pushed inland from Portland Bay, Port Phillip, and occupied "Merino Downs," "Muntham" and "Sandford" in 1837. When he later left the employ of Edward HENTY he worked near Mount Gambier and died at Penola, SA.

STOKES : William STOKES a farm worker of Carapook was a witness to the accidental death of Johann SCHULTZ in Dec 1874 when his horse and cart overturned on a steep hill at Carapook.
SUTTON : Anthony SUTTON (1810-1879), b. Co Wicklow, Ireland, son of William SUTTON and Mary KOERNER married in 1836, Ireland to Mary KIERNAN, b. 1819 Co Wicklow, Ireland, daughter of ___ and ___. Two children had been born on "Muntham" station, and a further seven were born at "Dismal Swamp" station, near Tarpeena, South Australia.

There was also a 19y old John PAYNE on board the "Priam", a groom, who was also employed by Edward HENTY for 12 months in 1852.

THORNLEY : Hon. Nathan THORNLEY (1838-1903) born 1838, Manchester, England, son of a Cotton Mill owner who arrived in Victoria about 1854. He was employed as a Government Surveyor and worked at Hamilton. He married Mary Josephine MURPHY (ca1840-1913) and they raised a family of 6 children. He was a partner of the Hamilton Stock & Station Agent firm of R. STAPLETON-BREE & Co. He was MLC for Western from 1882 to 1903. He purchased "Muntham Station" in the 1880s and had it run by a manager.

TREVASKIS : William Pooley TREVASKIS (1827-1913) married Julia FOLLETT in 1848 in Adelaide. They appear to have arrived in the Carapook distict by 1863 where William was recorded as a farmer of Carapook when he became a member of the first Glenelg Shire (then called the District Roads Board). William and Julia had the following family with the last four children probably born at Bruk Bruk - Julia, William, George, John, Robert, Mary, Lavinia, Frances, Adeline, Alice, Roseanna and Clara. Many of the children probably attended Bruk Bruk School which would have been close to their farm, north east of Carapook. The family appears to have moved onto Benalla and Mansfield. [NOTE: This may be the William POOLEY listed on the carapook map as a landowner.]
TROETH : James TROETH 1852-1840, b. DUTTON's Farm, Narrawong, Victoria to Abraham TROETH and Ann MAULL; boy stockman employed (1860s?) by Edward HENTY of "Muntham" Station for 5 years; returned to Narrawong where he became a bullock driver, carrier and farmer at Tyrendarra and Heywood; d. Portland; m. 1876 to Mary Ann Melinda MULLENS 1855-1936, b. Portland to James MULLENS and Caroline CLARKE; 6 children; d. Heywood, Victoria.

TULLY : William TULLY (~1844- ?) b. ~1844, Co Donegal, Ireland, son of Patrick TULLY and Rose Ann BONNER. William selected 464 acres of land at Carapook, S-W Victoria, Australia in 1865, won second prize for the best 20 bushells of wheat at the first Merino & Sandford Agricultural Society show in 1867. He sold his Carapook land in 1871 and moved to Garvoc near Warrnambool where other family members were located.
ULLYETT : John Reginald ULLYETT (1851-1919) was a teacher at S.S. 1969 Carapook in 1887-88.
UPTON : George UPTON (1832-1925), from Kent, England, veteran of the Crimean War, married Jane KANE in 1866. George worked on "Muntham" Station and later settled at Wando Vale. The family of George and Jane UPTON was - Carrey Elizabeth, Henry, George (d. 1878, Carapook aged 7y), William, Thomas John, Arthur, Mary Jane Ellen.
URQUHART : Marie Oliver URQUHART (1880-1946) born, Collingwood, Victoria, daughter of James URQUHART and Annie HERNE. Marie was the teacher at S.S. 1969 Carapook from 1905 to 1906. She married Victor John HALLETT in 1913 and died in 1946.

VALE : William VALE (1833-1977) purchased a number of blocks of land in the Parish of Bruk Bruk in the 1860s. He advertised "Tulse Hill" and other blocks in Bruk Bruk for sale later for auction in 1871. "Tulse Hill" was subsequently purchased in December 1871 by William CORNEY and his son Robert CORNEY of Portland. William VALE was born in London in 1833, was a gold-miner at Ballarat, Editor of local newspapers at Ararat, the "Hamilton Spectator" and "The Coleraine Albion" in the 1860s. He was an auctioneer & storekeeper at Coleraine, where he died in 1877. William VALE had married Maria MEATYARD (1832-1924) in Victoria in 1853. A Charles MEATYARD was also a landowner in the Parish of Bruk Bruk in the 1870s, perhaps a relative?. Maria married a Thomas CARMICHAEL after the death of William VALE and she died in Melbourne in 1924.
VOWELL : Richard Longfield VOWELL (ca 1794-1870), was born, Devonshire, England, son of Richard VOWELL and he died at Bruk Bruk (Carapook) in 1870 and was buried in the Old Casterton Cemetery aged 76 years.
WELSH : James WELSH (1831-1901) paid rates in 1875 on a Carapook property valued at £22. James died in 1901 and had lived in South Australia for 5 years and in Victoria for 36 years.

WARDELL : Mary Hanoria WARDELL (1804-1868) widow of Capt. George WARDELL late of H.M. 28th Lancers died at "Muntham" Station in June 1868, aged 64 years. This appears to have been Mary Honoria BROOKS who had been born in London in 1804. Her first marriage had been to Capt William WILSON who died in India in 1835. Mary then appears to have married as a widow to Capt George WARDELL in NSW in 1838. Mary was the mother-in-law of Charles McArthur KING, manager at "Muntham" Station from 1861-1879.
WESTBROOK : Robert WESTBROOK (ca 1875-1918), well known jockey in the 1890s. Robert took up horsebreaking and droving and lived at Carapook after his time as a jockey.

The family arrived in South Australia in 1854 and appear to have settled at Carapook by the 1860s. WHITE in 1875. It appears that the owners were the brothers Edward and Patrick WHITE, sons of Michael WHITE and Ellen KEILY from Limerick, Ireland.

WHITE : Thomas George WHITE (1874-1950) b. 1874, Carapook, married Stella Marie GARDINER in 1909 and they both died at Kew in Melbourne. Thomas George WHITE appears to be the son of Thomas WHITE above

WIGLEY : Thomas WIGLEY (c.1815/'19-1892), b. London, England to Thomas WIGLEY and Sarah GILES; convict (aged 17y) to VDL in 1837; certificate of freedom granted in 1843; left George Town (VDL) in 1846 on the brig "Union" bound for Portland and Adelaide; married 1853, Victoria to Elizabeth McBEAN 1826-1890, b. Dores, Inverness-shire, Scotland, to John McBEAN and Ann McGILLIVRAY; and had 6 children at Portland, Victoria 1857-1869. Elizabeth died at Portland, Victoria in 1890. Thomas is reported to have been a chimney sweep (Portland) and carrier (Heywood area). In an 1875 Portland Court case he stated that he was working at "Muntham" with George HORNE in 1871. Thomas died in the Portland Benevolent Asylum & Hospital in 1892, aged 76y.
WILLIAMSON : William WILLIAMSON (1820-1903), from Aberdeen, Scotland, son of William WILLIAMSON and Isabella LESLIE was married in 1852 to Alice Alicia SUTTON, daughter of Henry SUTTON and Mary HARRIS and they had the following family - Henry William, Isabella, Mary Elizabeth, Ellen, Emily Amelia, Catherine, Jessie Maria (b. Muntham 1866), Gillespie, Robert Alexander, Francis Sutton, Isaac William Harris, Elizabeth Julia and May Leslie.
WOMBWELL : Charles WOMBWELL (1811-1860) married Susanah REID in 1834 in Essex and emigrated to Australia in 1851. Charles worked at "Wando Vale" Station and "Muntham" Station before selecting land at Merino. Charles and Susannah had the following family - Mary Ann, Joseph, William, Honor / Mayer, Ulaliah, Abijah, James, Harriet, Phyllis, Emma, James, David & Amos (b. 1856, Muntham).
WOODALL : Hugh WOODALL (1841-1918) had a signature on the 1875 Carapook School petition and map showed 3 school-aged children, living 1/2 mile N of Carapook.
ZERBST : Daniel ZERBST (1806-1862) and his son Julius ZERBST (1839-1917) were listed as owners of 4 joining blocks of land at Carapook in the 1860s. Daniel & his wife Maria HIRSCHFELD were from the province of Posen, Prussia when they emigrated to South Australia in 1847 with 5 children. Michael Ferdinand ZERBST (1835-1915) another son of Daniel & Maria ZERBST, was married in 1861 at Hochkirch (Tarrington) near Hamilton, to Emilie LINDNER 1843-1940, from Nekla Hauland, Posen Prussia. Michael Ferdinand ZERBST, who had been a atation worker and bullock team driver in South Australia, drove his bullock team to Victoria in 1859. He was a farmer, growing wheat, at Carapook from 1862-67, after which he moved to Hochkirch, where he built and operated the "Cross Keys Hotel" from 1867-78. He later moved to the Wimmera as a farmer, and died at Horsham in 1915, after raising a family of 11.
