Charles Joseph KOCH was b. 1840, Duderstadt, Hanover, Germany, son of Phillip KOCH and Josephine ENGLEHART and married in 1866 near Portland, S-W Victoria to Sarah Foster STANFORD, b. 1848 Barossa Valley, South Australia, to William STANFORD and Mary HALE / HEALE. Sarah was sister of Janet STANFORD who was married to Emanuel JACKSON-MILLARD who also lived in the Carapook & Sandford area of S-W Victoria.

In 1871 Charles KOCH and William McLELLAN, both of Sandford were returning from Portland to Sandford in a spring cart when they had a fatal accident on the Drumborg Hill, north of Heywood, which resulted in the death of William McLELLAN

Charles KOCH paid £328 in rates on a Carapook property in 1875.

Charles KOCH died in 1900 and his wife Sarah died in 1929 and both are buried in the Sandford Cemetery.

Travelled to Europe 1897. "From a private source we learn that Mr Koch is extremely glad to get back to his native haunts, and that after the novelty had worn off, England had very little charms for him, he preferring the freshness and freedom of Australian scenery and life."

"... the largest farmer of this district..." [and] "... a most enterprising man. Some years ago he rented some thousands of acres, being part of Wando Vale and Dunrobin estates, for agricultural purposes. He was very successful in producing large quantities of wheat, and in some seasons realising one pound per bag. He employed a large number of men, in fact he may be said to have been the pioneer of the agricultural interest of the district, which has caused the advancement of Casterton to its present flourishing condition."
