Obituary for Thomas MARSH

Mr Thomas MARSH died on Monday, 20th July 1908
Mr Thomas Marsh one of the oldest residents of the Goroke district, died at his late residence, "Springbank," Goroke at 5 o'clock on Monday morning, 20th July. Deceased arrived in Portland on 2nd Oct, 1853, by the ship Anthona, accompanied by his wife and one child, a son (who was born at sea). He worked first for Mr Schofield, who was engaged wool scouring. Being young, strong and ambitious, he left for the gold fields, and after working some time without unearthing anything worthwhile he returned to Portland, where Mrs Marsh and child had remained. Here he entered the employ of the late Mr Edward Henty. He also worked at a large livery stable and horse-breaking establishment owned by a Mr George Smith. He was next engaged on "Kangaroo" Station (Mr McEachern's) near Hotspur, After leaving this station he re-entered the service of Edward Henty at "Muntham" station, near Casterton, and served with that gentleman for 8 years. Thinking he had been in service long enough, he struck out for himself and got a small piece of the "Chetwynd" run, but it was insufficient to keep a growing family (for his family had increased), so he struck out for the West Wimmera, where he had resided until his death, having been fairly successful. He has left a wife, three sons and five daughters, all being in comfortable circumstances, The sons are Messrs John (Lake Karnack), Charles (Bungaree), and George, and the daughters are Mesdames Lowe (2), Bailey, Adams, and Crabtree,

Mr Marsh was born at Salters Load, County Norfolk, England. He was married at the early age of 21 at Downham, Norfolk, to Miss Maria Lock, a native of London. Mrs Marsh has attained the ripe age of 84, and is fairly well considering that she, a short time ago, underwent a serious operation.
