John MULCAHY was b. ~1841, probably in Ireland, son of John MULCAHY and Mary BYRNE. By 1878 he was a storekeeper in the business known as "Sutton & Mulcahy" Mount Gambier, S-E South Australia.

Mary Josephine SUTTON was b. ~1854, probably at "Dismal Swamp" Station, Tarpeena, near Mount Gambier, S-E South Australia daughter of James SUTTON and Frances ELLIS. Her father James SUTTON was employed at "Dismal Swamp" station after the family's arrival at Adelaide, SA in 1852.

John MULCAHY and Mary Josephine SUTTON were married in 1878, at Mount Gambier, S-E South Australia and by 1880 had moved to over the border to Sandford, S-W Victoria where John became a local storekeeper. They only appear to have remained at Sandford for 2 or 3 years before the store was in financial difficulties...

NOTICE to CREDITORS. - Notice is hereby given, that JOHN MULCAHY, of Sandford, in the colony of Victoria, storekeeper, has by deed dated the tenth day of September, 1881, conveyed and assigned all his estate, property, and effects whatsoever and wheresoever to Edward Tyson and Henry William Danby, of the city of Melbourne, in the said colony, in trust, for realisation and otherwise for the benefit of all the creditors of the said John Mulcahy, as in the said deed mentioned. All persons having any CLAIMS against the estate are hereby required to SEND in the same and PARTICULARS thereof to Messrs Danby and Gilmour, accountants and trade assignees, 38 Elizabeth-street, Melbourne, the trustees' agents, by the 12th day of October, 1881, after which date the trustees will distribute the trust fund between those persons only of whose claims they shall have had notice. Dated this 27th day of September, 1881.

The family moved back to Mount Gambier by the end of 1882 and were at Dergolm, north of Casterton from about 1886 to 1891 where a number of their children attended school.

From 1892 to 1902 John was an inn-keeper back in Mount Gambier at both "The South Australian Hotel" and "The Sportsman's Arms."

From 1902 to 1905 John took over the lease of "The Bridge Inn" in Casterton, S-W Victoria before again returning to Mount Gambier in 1906.

The last business move was to the "Lord Exmouth Hotel" Grantville, Port Adelaide, South Australia which they took over in 1911 and remained there until John MULCAHY died in 1915 and his widow Mary Josphine died there in 1919. They are both buried in Adelaide.
