John Henry JACKSON 1829-1915, b. Launceston, Van Diemen's Land to John Henry JACKSON and Sarah Elizabeth LOWE was married in 1855 at the Parsoange on the Wannon, S-W Victoria to Mary Ann BOWTELL 1826-1884, b. London, England to Benjamin BOWTELL and Caroline WEBB. John Henry JACKSON was a nephew of William & Samuel JACKSON who purchased "Sandford House" Station from the HENTY family in 1847.

Bowtell Creek at Sandford was named after Mary Ann BOWTELL as stated in the following extract from the notes of Dr Ernest Sandford JACKSON, son of this couple.

"After crossing the Wannon the expedition (Major Mitchells) made its way over the hills within site of the Glenelg, for 3 or 4 miles, till it came to a creek afterwards named after my mother, Bowtell Creek, which constituted the western boundary of Sandford Estate, as I new it. It was a narrow stream with steep banks. Often have I jumped over it, and ridden across it at the spot known in after years as Mitchells Crossing, and marked by the logs which the explorer sank into the creek to make it fordable for his drays."

Mary Ann BOWTELL had arrived at Portland Bay, S-W Victoria from England on the ship "Birmingham" in 1855 as a carer for the children of Dr Caleb RADFORD, a well-known early medical practioner in the Wannon district. She died in QLD in 1884.

John Henry JACKSON was a Glenelg Shire Councillor from 1869-1873 and Shire President for one term.

John Henry JACKSON lived at 'Sandford House' from 1847, when the JACKSON family purchased it from the HENTY family, until his death at Sandford in 1915. He was buried in the Sandford cemetery.

OBITUARY. Mr. J. H. Jackson, of Sandford House, Sandford, has passed away, having died on Tuesday. The deceased who had reached the venerable age of 86 years, was born on January 29, 1829, at Longford, Tasmania, and arrived by a sailing boat in Port Phillip in 1843. He was employed by his uncles, Messrs Samuel and William Jackson, who had taken up land on Jackson's Creek, and built their home there. The former was the architect for the old Melbourne Hospital, and landed in Melbourne in 1835. Messrs Jackson Brothers' property was then known as Koora-Koora-Kup, and after selling it to Sir William (then Mr. W. J.) Clarke, father of Sir Rupert Clarke in 1843, they purchased the Sandford estate from Mr. John Henty. The management of the estate was entrusted to Mr. Arden, and Mr. Jackson went from Koora-Koora-Kup to help in fighting the scab, which was then rampant in the district. He arrived at Sandford on August 11, 1847 (says the Spectator), after riding across country by himself, and was then only 18 years of age. During his long sojourn in this part of Victoria, Mr. Jackson made hosts of friends, his sterling characteristics winning the esteem of all with whom he came in contact. He leaves two sons, Mr. H. B. Jackson, of Sandford, and Dr. E. S. Jackson. of Brisbane, who is now in Egypt with the Australian field hospital, and one daughter, Mrs. Macarthur, of Gippsland, and also numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
