John LEAKE b. 1800, Staffordshire, England, son of John LEAKE & Mary ___ was married in 1841 at Adelaide, South Australia to Mary WESTON b. c.1819 in Co Carlow, Ireland, daughter of ____ & ___.

John LEAKE and his wife came to Port Fairy and Portland about 1842 and joined Richard LEWIS (later of the "Woolpack Inn" and "Rifle Downs" station, Digby) in whaling, fishing, and tending wool ships. He then established a carrying business until he purchased one of the first lots of land at Merino. Here he settled, expanded his farm, raised his 4 children until his wife died in 1872.

As he became more frail he lived with his son Joseph at the "Glenelg Hotel" in Casterton, owned by his son, and this is where he died at the age of 92 years in 1893.

John LEAKE and his wife Mary WESTON are both buried in the Merino Cemetery in 1893 and 1872 respectively.
