The Strathdownie Honour Board is located in the Strathdownie Memorial Hall which was opened in 1958.
Strathdownie is near the South Australian border between Casterton and Mount Gambier.

Vernon Francis John CAIN, born 1887, Strathdownie, Victoria, son of John CAIN and Mary Ann CREED, died 1962, Strathdownie. He was a Grazier of "Dunmoor" Strathdownie when he enlisted in the AIF on 15 Jul 1915 and embarked on 29 Dec 1915 from Melbourne as Pte 4154, 14th Battalion, AIF. In the Middle east he transferred to the 12th Field Artillery Brigade, AIF and arrived in France on 10 Jun 1916. He transferred to the 10th Field Artillerey Brigade, AIF in 1917 in France and RTA on 8 Jun 1919.

James Edward DAVIES, born 1881, Lake Mundi (near Strathdownie), Victoria, son of James Robert DAVIES and Jessie Skirving ELLIS and was recorded as a Station Hand of Kybybolite, near Naracoorte, South Australia when he enlisted in the AIF on 1 Feb 1916. He embarked from Adelaide on 1 Feb 1916 as Pte 1904, 48th Battalion, AIF and arrived on France on 21 Nov 1916. He was repatriated to Australia and discharged in Adelaide on 20 Oct 1917. James DAVIES married Clara MIELS at Mount Barker. South Australia in 1920 and had three children born at Naracoorte from 1922 to 1925. His wife Clara died at Naracoorte in 1950 and James DAVIES died at Adelaide in 1961.

Charles Simpson EGERTON, born 1887, Strathdownie, Victoria, son of David EGERTON and Mary Ann SIMPSON, died 1942, Casterton, Victoria. He was recorded as a Grazier of "Wattle Grange" Casterton when he enlisted in the AIF on 14 Jan 1916. He embarked on 25 May 1916 from Melbourne and served as Spr 10602, 3rd Division Signal Company, AIF in England and France. He was listed as Cpl 10602, 3rd Division Signal Company, AIF when he married Daisy Ellen EVES in Bedford, England in 1916 prior to sailing for France a few days later. He returned to Australia in 1919 and appears to have remarried to Kathleen Maud MOORE of Casterton. Charles EGERTON died at Casterton 1942.

Thomas Love Kelynack HARVEY, born 1881, Caroline (near Mount Gambier), South Australia, son of Henry Love Kelynack HARVEY and Mary Ann SMITH, died 1948, Mount Gambier, South Australia. He was recorded as a 35 year old, single, Shearer of Strathdownie when he enlisted in the AIF on 8 Feb 1916. He embarked on the "Orsova" from melbourne on 1 Aug 1916 and arrived in France as Pte 2294, 58th Battalion, AIF on 6 Dec 1916. He was severley wounded in France on 4 Feb 1917 and admitted to hospital in London. Eventually he was repatriated to Australia on the Hospital Ship "Kanowna", arriving in Melbourne on 11 Sep 1917, and discharged on 6 Mar 1918. Thomas HARVEY married Sophia MOLES in 1921 at Mount Gambier, South Australia and they had at least 2 children and he died at Mount Gambier in 1948.

John "Jack" McDONALD, born 1890, Werrikoo Parish, Strathdownie, Victoria, son of John Samuel McDONALD and Eliza Thompson McDONALD of "The Gums" Strathdownie, Victoria. He was recorded as a single, Labourer, age 24y when he enlisted in the AIF at Melbourne on 28 May 1915. He embarked from Melbourne on "Demosthenes" on 16 Jul 1915 and was taken on strength at Gallipoli on 29 Sep 1915 as Pte 1690, 24th Battalion AIF. He was admitted sick to hospital in Malta and rejoined his Battalion in Egypt on 11 Jan 1917. He arrived in France on 26 Mar 1916 and was killed in action on 24 August 1916 at North Mouquet Farm, France.

Andrew Duncan McFARLANE, born 1893 Strathdownie, Victoria, son of Andrew McFARLANE and Hannah DREWETT. He was recorded as a labourer, age 23y 3m when he enlisted in the AIF at Casterton on 21 Apr 1915. He embarked as Pte 2224 with the 6th reinforcements for the 6th Battalion, AIF on the "Wandilla" from Melbourne on 17 Jun 1916. He joined his Battalion on Gallipoli on 6 Aug 1915 and was wounded in a shell explosion the next day and sent to hospital in Cairo. He rejoined his unit on 20 Nov 1915 and returned to Egypt on 7 Jan 1916. He was soon off to France and disembarked at Marseilles on 25 Mar 1916 and was killed in action on 20 Aug 1916 in France.

McFARLANE, H. |
Hector McFARLANE [M.M.], born 1889 Strathdownie, Victoria, son of Malcolm McFARLANE and Christina FRASER. He was a Boundary Rider of Strathdownie when he enlisted in the AIF at Melbourne on 13 Jan 1915, and served as Pte 235, 21st Battalion, AIF at Gallipoli. He later served in France, was promoted to Corporal on 17 Aug 1916 and wounded in action on 24 Aug 1917. Hector was awarded the Military Medal for bravery on 31 Mar 1917 for an action which occured in February 1917. Promoted to Sergeant on 14 Sep 1918 and transferred to the 24th Battalion, AIF on 13 Oct 1918. He returned to Australia in 1919 on the "Tres Montes" and was living at Strathdownie in 1921 and 1923 when he signed for War medals. Hector was residing in a Soldiers' Home at Myrtle Bank, Adelaide in 1958 when he rquested a statement of AIF service. He died ........?

Percy David McFARLANE, born 1894 Ardno, Strathdownie, Victoria, son of Andrew McFARLANE and Hannah DREWETT. Perce was a Labourer of Ardno, Strathdownie when he enlisted in the AIF on 18 Aug 1915, and served in the Middle east as Pte 1588, 9th Light Horse Regiment, AIF after embaking from Adelaide on 18 Nov 1915 on the "Geelong". He returned to Australia from Kantara, Egypt per "Oxfordshire" which landed in Adelaide on 10 Auh 1919. Perce married Flora Mabel ASHBY of Lake Mundi in 1922 and had at least 3 children born in before 1930. He died in 1983 and was buried in the Mount Gambier Cemetery.

James "Jim" Donald McKINNON, born 1893, Glenburnie, South Australia, son of Lachlan McKINNON and Margaret McMILLAN. He enlisted in the AIF on 21 Apr 1915 and embarked per "Wandiilla" from Melbourne on 17 Jun 1915 as Pte 2209, 6th Battalion, AIF. He joined his unit on Gallipoli on 6 Aug 1915 and was killed in action the next day near German Officer's Trench, Anzac, Gallipoli, Turkey. He was buried in the Shrapnel Valley Cemetery, Anzac, Gallipoli.

He enlisted in the AIF on 13 Oct 1915, and embarked from Melbourne on 18 Jan 1916 per "Vestalia" as Pte 1853A, 8th Light Horse Regiment, AIF. He disembarked at Plymouth, England on 12 Jun 1916 joined the 12th Field Artillery Brigade, AIF in France on 23 Aug 1916. He was promoted to Bdr on 5 Apr 1918. He returned to Australia in 1919 per "Karagola" and was discharged 4 Aug 1919. He became a Soldier Settler on "Nangeela" Estate near Casterton and married Mary Galbraith "Minnie" McCORKINDALE in 1925. They are both buried in the Strathdownie Cemetery.

William Nicol McNICOL, born 1891 North Dartmoor, S-W Victoria, son of Alexander "Alec" McNICOL & Hannah NEAVE. He was a labourer of Strathdownie when he enlisted in the AIF on 8 Apr 1915, and served as Pte 2210, 6th Battalion, AIF on Gallipoli and in France where he was wounded. He was promoted to Lt. in 1919 and served with the AIF Graves Unit before returning to Australia later in 1919. He became a Soldier Settler on "Nangeela" Estate near Casterton and married Christina Margaret McDONALD daughter of Donald McDONALD and Christina McINTOSH of Tarrayoukyan, in the 1940s and he died at Frankston, Melbourne in 1979 and they are both buried in the Tarrayoukyan Cemetery, near Harrow, S-W Victoria.

William MOLES, born 1884 Strathdownie, Victoria, son of James MOLES and Agnes BLACK. He died in 1928 at Mount Gambier, South Australia. William was a Grazier of Ardno, Strathdownie when he enlisted in the AIF on 5 Oct 1916, and served as Gunner 31543, 3rd & 4th Division Ammunition Columns & 11th Field Artilley Brigade, AIF. William MOLES embarked from Melbourne on the "Orontes" on 23 Dec 1916, and arrived at Plymouth, England on 17 Feb 1917. He transferred to the 4th Division Ammunition Column in France on 2 Aug 1917, then to the 11th Field Artillery Brigade on 9 Aug 1917. He returned to Australia in 1919 per "Port Dennison" and was living at Strathdownie in 1923 when he applied for his war medals and was still living at Strathdownie when he died in 1928.

George Alexander PENNY, born 1895 Mount Gambier, South Australia, son of John Henry Hutchins PENNY and Annie Eliza STEEL of "Ardno East", Strahdownie. He died in 1959 at Moonee Ponds, Melbourne. George enlisted in the AIF on 7 May 1915, and embarked from Melbourne per "Demosthenes" on 16 Jul 1915 as Pte 1723, 22nd Battalion (2nd reinforcements), AIF. He joined the 21st Battalion at Gallipoli in August 1915, and admitted sick to a hospital ship off Gallipoli in November. He disembarked at Marseilles, France with the 21st Battalion on 5 Jun 1916 and was wounded in Aug 1916. He transferred to the 22nd Machine Gun Company in 1917 (it later became the 2nd Machine Gun Battalion) and was wounded again on 22 Jan 1918 and was admitted to Hospital in England. 2nd Machine Gun Battalion, AIF. George PENNY married Beatrice May WHEELER in 1917 in England when serving with the AIF. He returned to Australia in 1919 and obtained a Soldier Settlement block on Glenorchy Estate, near Merino, Victoria.

Robert Adolphus PENNY, born 1887, Mount Gambier, South Australia, son of John Henry Hutchins PENNY and Annie Eliza STEEL of "Ardno East", Strathdownie, Victoria. He died in 1955 at Portland, Victoria. Robert was a Labourer of Ardno, Victoria when he enlisted in the AIF on 13 May 1916, and embarked from Melbourne on 17 Jan 1917 as Pte 603, 2nd Machine Gun Battalion, AIF. He arrived in France in June 1917 and was wounded in action in September 1917 and again in October, 1917 when serving with the AIF in France. He returned sick to Australia in 1920 per "Cape Verde" and was discharged from the AIF on 18 Apr 1920. He appears to have married Lily WALKER at Mount Gambier in 1917 before embarking for overseas and appears to have had second marriage to Lucy May COLLINS from Bendigo after the War.

REID, A. B. |
Alexander Bruce REID, born 1888 Mount Gambier, South Australia, son of Thomas Henderson REID and Susan PATON of "Ardno" Strathdownie, Victoria. He was listed as a Motor Driver of Ardno, Strathdownie when he enlisted in the AIF on 1 May 1916. He served in France as Pte 2231, 48th Battalion, AIF, after embarking on the "Ballarat" from Adelaide, South Australia on 12 Aug 1916. He was admiited sick to hospital on two occasions in France in 1917, and was wounded in action on 3 May 1918, and died of wounds on 4 May 1918 in France. Alexander Bruce REID was buried in the Pernois British Cemetery, near Amiens, France.

He enlisted in the AIF on 24 Aug 1915 from Mount Gambier where he was listed as a Blacksmith. He embarked on the "Geelong" from Adelaide on 18 Nov 1915 and served as Pte 1606, 9th Light Horse Regiment, AIF and Shoeing Smith with the 3rd Machine Gun Squadron, AIF, in Palestine. He returned to Australia in 1919 and married Alice Marion ATTIWILL in 1925 and moved to Melbourne, Victoria.

Walter George SMITH, born 1892 Dartmoor, Victoria, son of John Henry 'Harry' SMITH & Christine LIVINGSTONE. Walter enlisted in the AIF on 29 Sep 1916 from Strathdownie. He married Elsie Margaret McCALLUM 1895-1964, daughter of Duncan McCALLUM and Doris PAHL in October 1916 at Mt Gambier, South Australia. He embarked on the "Clan McCorquodale" from Adelaide on 5 Feb 1917. He served as Pte 3131, 9th Light Horse Regiment, AIF, drowned at Gaza, Palestine, 14 June 1917 when on leave and attempting to save the lives of some French soldiers.

He was a Labourer, age 26y of Strathdownie when he enlisted in the AIF on 24 Sep 1915, and embarked as Pte 1895, 8th Light Horse Regiment, AIF in Jan 1916. He transferred to the 12th Field Artillery Brigade, AIF and served in France from 1916 to 1919. He returned to Australia in 1919, married Mary Maude LACEY in 1921 and lived at Dartmoor up to 1939 after which they moved to Mount Gambier.

William George BULL, b. 1894 Strathdownie, Victoria, son of Samuel BULL and Ann JARRAD of West Strathdownie. He enlisted at Heywood as Pte 2336, 24th Battalion AIF, and embarked per "Osterley" from Melbourne on 29 Sep 1915. He was in hospital in Egypt and arrived at Marseilles, France on 29 Mar 1916. He was wounded on 10 Mar 1916, and married when in England in 1917 to Ellen Elizabeth WEBB of Essex. He was wounded again in France on 15 Apr 1918 and admitted to hospital in England, He rejoined the Battalion in France on 19 Aug 1918 and wounded for a third time (severeley) on 1 Sep 1918 and died 2 days later in hospital at Rouen, France. He was buried in the St Server Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France. His widow and her parents came to Australia and she later married his brother "Ike" BULL. |

He enlisted as Pte 1684, 19th Battalion AIF, on 22 May 1915, Liverpool, NSW and embarked overseas on 19 Jun 1915 per "Kanowna" from Sydney, New South Wales. He arrived at Gallipoli in Aug 1915 and was admitted to hospital on 22 Nov 1915. He returned to duty on Gallipoli on 30 Nov 1915 and served until the evacuation and returned to Egypt on 7 Jan 1916. In the next phase of the war he disembarked at Marseilles, France with the 19th Battalion, AIF on 25 Mar 1916 and served in France until he was killed in action on 3 May 1917 at Bullecourt on the Somme, France. |

His father Peter McFARLANE died in 1904 and his mother was living at Galah, Ouyen, Victoria when he enlisted on 22 Mar 1916 as Pte 6063, 6th Battalion AIF at Mildura, Victoria. Roy McFARLANE embarked from Melbourne on the "Thermistocles" and disembarked at Plymouth, England on 11 Sep 1916. He went to France and joined the 38th Battalion, AIF on 22 Nov 1916. He was wounded in action on 6 Mar 1916 and died of wounds 12 Mar 1917 at the 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, France. He was buried in Trois-Arbres Cemetery Steenwerck, Belgium. |
