George Charles Frederick BLACK [M.M.] 1897-1978, b. Casterton, S-W Victoria, son of John William BLACK & Louisa SEALEY. He was a labourer of Casterton when he enlisted in the AIF on 20 Mar 1916, farewelled at the Dunrobin Hall on 22 April 1916 before he embarked from Melbourne on 27 May 1916 as Pte 1234, 39th Battalion, AIF. He arrived in France on 23 November 1916, was wounded on 4 June 1917, awarded the Military Medal on 4th Oct 1917 during an operation ay Ypres. He was wounded on another 2 occasions before he returned to Australia in 1919 per "Karoa" and was discharged 8 May 1919. He became a Soldier Settler on "Nangeela" Estate near Casterton and married Eileen Rose WIDDICOMBE 1903-1985, in 1931.

George BLYTH [M.M.] 1898-1985, b. Maffra, Gippsland, Victoria, son of John BLYTH & Charlotte du MOULIN. He was recorded as a single, labourer, aged 18y of Cobram, Vic., when he enlisted in the AIF on 29 September 1916; embarked from Melbourne, Vic., on 11 May 1917 as Pte 6784, 24th Battalion, AIF; joined his unit in France on 23 November 1917; awarded the Military Medal for an action in 1918; arrived Melbourne per "Persic" on 29 August 1919. His address was Cobram, Victoria when selected for a Soldier Settlement block on "Nangeela" Estate, Casterton in October 1920. Died in Melbourne in 1985. George may have been the George BLYTH who was married in 1927 to Ruby Pearl ASH 1901-1977, born Shepparton, daughter of John ASH and Alice ROBBINS.

Ian du Moulin BLYTH 1896-1975, b. Maffra, Gippsland, Victoria, son of John BLYTH & Charlotte du MOULIN. He was recorded as a single farmer, aged 19y of Cobram, Vic., when he enlisted in the AIF on 9 March 1916; embarked on the "Persic" from Melbourne, Vic., on 3 Jun 1916 as Dvr. 10969, 3rd Division Ammunition Train, AIF; wrote a letter home from France on 25 January 1917; reported wounded (shell shock) in October 1918; returned home 1919. His address was Coleraine, S-W Victoria when selected for a Soldier Settlement block on "Nangeela" Estate, Casterton in October 1920. Ian BLYTH was married at Casterton in 1923 to Joan Sunderland MATHESON 1901-1968, born Sandford, S-W Vic., daughter of Kenneth Murray MATHESON and Ethel Blanch Sunderland BARRETT. They had three children at Casterton in the 1920s. Joan died at Melbourne in 1968 and Ian died in Queensland in 1975.

William Alexander COTTER 1891-1941, b. Carapook, S-W Victoria, son of John Archibald COTTER & Caroline Elizabeth McCALLUM. He married Eva Lilian AYRES, of Casterton in 1914; recorded as a married labourer of Carapook, S-W Vic., when he enlisted in the AIF on 22 February 1916; farewelled from Carapook on 22 April 1916; embarked on the "Themistocles" from Melbourne, Vic., on 28 July 1916 as Tpr 1832, 13th Light Horse Regiment, AIF; joined his unit in France on 11 January 1917; attached to 2nd Division HQ 1917-18; arrived Melbourne per "Bahia Castillo" on 19 June 1920. Soldier Settler on "Nangeela" Estate 1920-1925, then resided in Casterton, and later at Hamilton wher he died in 1941 and buried at Casterton.

Appears to be William Edward COXON 1883-1949, b. Brimboal, Wando Vale, Victoria, son of John COXON & Ann CARLTON. He was married in 1910 to Ethel "Bessie" BROWN 1891-1939, born Eaglehawk, Victoria, daughter of John BROWN and Emily Jane ANGOVE. He was noted as married, labourer of Casterton when enlisted in the AIF at Hamilton, Victoria, on 10 Apr 1916. He embarked from Melbourne on the "Orontes" on 16 August 1916, and arrived in France on 23 November 1916 as Pte 1808, 39th Battalion (reinforcements), AIF. He served in France until 1919. He embarked from England on the "Karogola" on 30 April 1919, arrived back at Melbourne and was discharged from the AIF on 20 July 1919. He became a successful applicant as a Soldier Settler on "Nangeela" Estate near Casterton in October 1920. He left Nangeela after the death of his in 1939. He died at Mlebourne in 1949 and both he and his wife are buried in the Casterton new cemetery.

John Gladstone DAVIDSON 1893-1978, b. Penola, SA, son of George Gladstone DAVIDSON & Louisa PICKEN. He was recorded as a grazier, single, aged 22y 7m, of Lake Mundi, between Casterton and Penola in S-W Victoria when he enlisted at Hamilton, Victoria in the AIF on 15 May 1916. He embarked from Melbourne on the "Shropshire" on 25 September 1916, arrived at Plymouth, England on 11 November 1916 as Pte 5583, 21st Battalion (reinforcements), AIF. He went to France in February 1917 and was wounded 9 April 1918, invalided to the UK with influenza 27 August 1918. He left England on the ship "Ceramic" on 25 January 1919, arrived Melbourne, Australia on 23 March 1919, discharged from the AIF 30 April 1919. He was residing at Lake Mundi, S-W Victoria when selected for a Soldier Settlement block on "Nangeela" Estate, Casterton in October 1920. He died in 1978 and was buried in the Penola cemetery.

Hector Norman DONNE 1887-1966, b. Moyston, Victoria, son of Thomas DONNE & Catherine McDONALD. Thomas married in 1915 to Mary Elizabeth "May" FREELAND 1896-1981, b. Beulah, N-W Victoria, daughter of George FREELAND and Harietta KAY. Hector Norman DONNE was recorded as a labourer, married, aged 29y, of Walpeup, N-W Victoria when he enlisted at Mildura, Victoria in the AIF on 23 March 1916. He embarked from Melbourne on the "Orsova" on 1 August 1916, arrived at Plymouth, England on 14 September 1916 as Pte 2146, 60th Battalion, AIF. He went to France in December 1916 and was wounded and gassed in September 1917, and admitted to hospital at Exeter, England. He left England on the ship "Saxon" on 11 December 1918, arrived at Melbourne, Australia on 30 January 1919 and was discharged from the AIF in March 1919. He was residing at Warrnambool, Victoria when offered a Soldier Settlement block on "Nangeela" Estate in October 1920. He died at Casterton in 1965 and his wife died there in 1981 and both are buried in the Casterton cemetery.

John Francis HOWLETT 1880-1960, b. Dergholm, S-W Victoria, son of Hezekiah HOWLETT & Margaret Leishman "Maggie" SHAW. He married in 1907 to Annie SHARAM, b. 1885 Penola, SA, daughter of William SHARAM and Annie Laura HOLMES and they had 3 children from 1908 to 1912. He was recorded as an apiarist of Dergholm, aged 35y, married with 3 children when he enlisted in the AIF in April 1916. He trained as Pte 3059, 8th Light Horse Regiment (reinforcements), AIF at Broadmeadows and Seymour, Victoria. He was discharged medically unfit in June 1917 after scalding his foot when on leave. He was a successful applicant for a Soldier Settlement block on "Nangeela" Estate in October 1920. John and his wife Annie HOWLETT both died at Casterton in 1960 and were buried in the new cemetery.

Edgar Robert Hamilton JEFFREYS 1883-1962, b. Casterton, S-W Victoria, son of Robert William JEFFREYS & Johanna "Annie" DAVIS. He was recorded as a horsebreaker, single, aged 35y 7m, of Charleville, Queensland, when he enlisted at Toowoomba, Queensland in the AIF on 19 October 1915. He embarked from Australia and arrived in Egypt by March 1916 as Pte 3828, 26th Battalion (reinforcements), AIF. He transferred as Pte 3828, 2nd Battalion, AIF and embarked from Alexandria, Egypt on 19 March 1916, disembarked at Marseilles, France on 26 March 1916. He was wounded 5 August 1916 and admitted to hospital in the UK. He rejoined his unit in France as Dvr 3828, 2nd Pioneer Battalion, AIF on 30 May 1917. He left England on the ship "Nestor" on 20 May 1919, arrived Melbourne, Australia on 4 July 1919, discharged from the AIF 24 August 1919. He was residing at Casterton, S-W Victoria when selected for a Soldier Settlement block on "Nangeela" Estate, Casterton in October 1920. Edgar JEFFREYS married Hetty Ellen TUFFNELL in 1928, Edgar died at Casterton in 1962 and Hetty in 1972, both buried in the Casterton new cemetery.

James Francis "Frank" McNICOL 1892-1987, born North Dartmoor, S-W Victoria, son of Alexander "Alec" McNICOL & Hannah NEAVE. He enlisted in the AIF on 13 Oct 1915, and embarked from Melbourne on 18 Jan 1916 per "Vestalia" as Pte 1853A, 8th Light Horse Regiment, AIF. He disembarked at Plymouth, England on 12 Jun 1916 joined the 12th Field Artillery Brigade, AIF in France on 23 Aug 1916. He was promoted to Bdr on 5 Apr 1918. He returned to Australia in 1919 per "Karagola" and was discharged 4 Aug 1919. He became a Soldier Settler on "Nangeela" Estate near Casterton and married Mary Galbraith "Minnie" McCORKINDALE 1893-1990, in 1925. He was Glenelg Shire Councillor. Frank & Minnie McNICOL are buried in the Strathdownie Cemetery.

William Nicol McNICOL 1891-1979, born North Dartmoor, S-W Victoria, son of Alexander "Alec" McNICOL & Hannah NEAVE. He was a labourer of Strathdownie when he enlisted in the AIF on 8 Apr 1915, and served as Pte 2210, 6th Battalion, AIF on Gallipoli and in France where he was wounded. He was promoted to Lt. in 1919 and served with the AIF Graves Unit before returning to Australia later in 1919. He became a Soldier Settler on "Nangeela" Estate near Casterton and married Christina Margaret McDONALD 1899-1977, daughter of Donald McDONALD and Christina McINTOSH of Tarrayoukyan, in the 1940s. Christina died at Casterton in 1977 and William died at Frankston, Victoria in 1979 and they are both buried in the Tarrayoukyan Cemetery, near Harrow, S-W Victoria.

Archibald Stanley MILL 1893-1980, b. Truro, Cornwall, England, son of William MILL & Selina Mary MITCHELL. He enlisted in the 1st AIF as Pte 954, 4th Light Horse Regiment, AIF, and later was Cpl 954, 2nd Australian Veterinary Hospital, AIF; enlisted 14-09-1914; served at Gallipoli & in France, RTA 19-04-1919. In 1920 he married Emily Jane BAWDEN 1892-1977, born Clunes, Victoria, daughter of John BAWDEN and Emily HICKOX. Emily died at Casterton in 1977 and Archibald died there in 1980, both buried in the Casterton new cemetery. Archibald Stanley MILL...

Felicyan Emil NOWACKI 1891-1965, b. Casterton, S-W Victoria, son of Leon NOWACKI & Isabella GRINHAM. Fleycian NOWACKI was recorded as a farmer, single, aged 23 years, of Bahgallah, when he enlisted in the AIF on 29 Mar 1915. He embarked from Melbourne on 9 Jul 1915 with reinforcements for the 24th Battalion, AIF, and arrived in the Middle East. He was transferred to the Camel Corps on 4 Mar 1916 and promoted to Corporal then Sergent on 20 Apr 1917. On 1 Jul 1918 he transferred to the 14th Light Horse Regiment and remained with that unit until his RTA on 25 Aug 1919. He married Mary Elizabeth McINTYRE, a member of another Bahgallah family, in 1921 and became a Soldier Settler on "Nangeela" Estate to the North of Casterton in 1920. He was a Glenelg Shire Councillor in the 1940s and died at Casterton in 1965 and buried in the Casterton new cemetery.

Thomas ROWE 1884-1958, b. Muddy Creek, Hamilton, S-W Victoria, son of Samuel ROWE & Janet GALLACHER. Thomas ROWE, labourer of "Retreat" station was married in 1909 at Casterton, S-W Vic. to Ettie Florence RICHARDSON 1885-1963, born Casterton, S-W Vic., daughter of John Thomas RICHARDSON and Mary BONNER. Two children were born at Casterton in 1910 and 1914 before Thomas ROWE, labouer, married, aged 32y enlisted in the AIF at Hamilton, S-W Vic., on 5 June 1916. He embarked from Melbourne on the "Port Lincoln" on 20 October 1916, changed ships to the "Benalla" at Sierra Leone, Africa and arrived at Plymouth, England on 9 January 1917 as Pte 2356, 39th Battalion (reinforcements), AIF. He served in France from 25 April 1917 until August 1918 when he was gassed and evacuated to a hospital in Bristol, England. He embarked from England on the "Orontes" on 20 December 1918, arrived back at Melbourne on 30 January 1919. He became a successful applicant as a Soldier Settler on "Nangeela" Estate near Casterton in October 1920. Thomas died in Casterton 1958 and his widow Ettie died 1963 and both are buried in the Casterton new cemetery.

George TAIT 1888-1976, b. Casterton, S-W Victoria, son of John TAIT & Thurza BONNER. George TAIT, single, labourer of Casterton enlisted in the AIF at Hamilton, S-W Vic., on 21 March 1916. He embarked from Melbourne on the "Euripides" on 11 September 1916, and arrived at Plymouth, England on 26 October 1916 as Pte 6351, 39th Battalion (reinforcements), AIF. He served in France from 17 December 1916 until April 1919. He embarked from England on the "Soudan" on 12 May 1919, arrived back at Melbourne on 29 June 1919 and was discharged from the AIF on 6 Aug 1919. He became a successful applicant as a Soldier Settler on "Nangeela" Estate near Casterton in October 1920. George TAIT married in 1922 to Florence Pearl May FALLON 1892-1974, born Benayeo, Apsley, S-W Vic., daughter of Michael FALLON and Jessie Flora RICHARDS. Florence died at Portland in 1974 and George died at Hamilton in 1976 and both are buried in the Casterton new cemetery.

Ten additional estates in Victoria have been acquired by the Lands department for purposes of soldiers' settlement, at prices fixed by the Closer Settlement Board. The prices paid are in most cases lower than those demanded by the vendors, but in four instances the shire valuation was exceeded. The total purchase money will amount to £490,496. A list of the estates is appended:

Source : "The Argus" Wednesday, 21st July 1920.Of 533 returned soldiers drawing unemployment sustenance in Victoria, 382 are in the metropolitan district and the remainder in the country. A number of unemployed general labourers are registered at the Melbourne office, of the Repatriation department. Last week 220 men passed off the employment books, 110 of whom were found employment by the department.
Nangeela Subdivision --- The Closer Settlement Board invites applications from returned, discharged soldiers for allotments contained in the Nangeela Estate (Macpherson's). The estate comprises 3,057 acres, and is within nine miles of Casterton railway station. It has been subdivided into 15 allotments, varying from 125 acres to 423 acres, and ranging in value from £1,928 to £3,850. The land is suitible for mixed farming, dairying and grazing. The survey will be put in hand at once, and successful applicants will be given permission to go into occupation at an early date.

O'Toole, assisted by the president of the Glenelg shire (Councillor Rhodes), sat yesterday and to-day to decide on the allotment of blocks in the Nangeela Estate, 3,057 acres, situated nine miles from Casterton. There were 65 applicants for 15 blocks. The recommendations were:--
Messers. P. Learmonth & Co., T. H. Laidlaw & Co., and Young Bros., auctioneers in conjunction, conducted an important clearing sale at Casterton on Thursday last, when they offered, on behalf of Messrs. Harris and Dunne, whose lease of the Nangeela Estate (recently sold for soldier settlement) has expired, a yarding of 10,767 sheep, 30 horses, and 13 cattle, besides station plant. Keen competition was manifested throughout, and a most satisfactory clearance was effected, practically the whole of the stock offered being disposed of under the hammer. In fact, considering quality, it can he fairly claimed that a record was established. The sheep brought particularly good prices, one line of Goolgumblah bred ewes, with lambs at foot, realising £3 10/6, and 1,200 of the same breeding £2 18/11., The whole of the 10,500 sheep sold made the very satisfactory average of £1 17/11.
