"Portland Guardian" (Vic.) Monday, 10th December 1934.
OBITUARY. After an illness extending over a period of nearly two years, the death occurred at the Casterton hospital on Tuesday morning last of Mrs. Louisa Black, at the age of 73 years. A widow of the late Mr. John Black, whose demise occurred at Casterton some twenty years ago, the deceased lady was one of the oldest-born Casterton residents, and spent, her whole life in that district. Her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. George Sealey, came to Casterton when there were only two houses in that town, which at the time was overrun with black fellows. After her marriage, Mrs. Black resided with her husband in Miller Street, where the family remained until fifteen years ago, when five years after her husband's death, Mrs. Black went to reside with her son, Mr. George Black, when he selected the homestead block at Nangeela on the subdivision of that estate for settlement of soldiers after the war. On one occasion Mrs. Black and her husband had their house in Miller St. destroyed by fire, but rebuilt their home on the same site. It was only of recent years that the deceased lady suffered a serious decline in health, being of a robust and cheerful nature, and having an untiring energy that was the admiration of her many friends and acquaintances. She always maintained a lively interest in public affairs, and particularly in the social life of the town, and its environments, where she was much esteemed for her very charitable nature to all worthy objects. A wide circle of friends was not confined solely to Casterton and Nangeela, as many Portland residents knew the deceased lady well and favorably. Following the loss of her husband, Mrs. Black suffered a severe loss when a son, Gordon, a runner attached to 10th Brigade headquarters staff, was killed at Paschendale on the 4th October, 1917, a period when most of the severe fighting in the Ypres sector was in progress. Four sons and four daughters survive their mother.
The sons are:-Messrs. E. J. Black, "Baroona," Dunrobin ; G. Black ("Homestead," Nangeela, and who was also a member of the same brigade in the A.I.F. as his deceased brother) ; Stanley Black, "Carinya," Nangeela ; and Mr. Walter Black, Petone, New Zealand.
The daughters are:-Susan (Mrs. H. Holden), Casterton ; Lilian (Mrs. W. C. Dunne), Portland ; Christina (Mrs. J. North), Port McDonnell ; and Florence (Mrs. Albert Brunton), Vite Vite. Surviving brothers and sisters are:-Mr. Clarence Sealey (Mt. Gambier), Mr. Fred Sealey (Powelltown, Gippsland), Messrs. Alfred and John Sealey (Casterton), Mr. William Sealey (Corndale), Mr. James Sealey (Melbourne), Mrs. William Baxter (Casterton), and Mrs. A. Hughes (Sydney).
The funeral took place on Wednesday, when a long cortege left Scots Church, Casterton, for the local cemetery. The large and varied number of beautiful wreaths sent from all parts of the district presented a fitting testimony to the high esteem in which the deceased was held. The Rev. R. Rankin conducted the services at the church and graveside, and the funeral directors were Messrs. W. J. Peden and Son.

"Portland Guardian" (Vic.) Monday, 20th January 1941.
OBITUARY. MRS. ELIZA LEA. Another link with the past was broken on Sunday, when the death occurred, at a Portland hospital after an illness extending for some time, of Mrs. Eliza Lea, who was highly respected and well known to a large number of Portland residents. The cause of her death was heart trouble.
In her 84th year, Mrs. Lea was, as is not generally known, a native of Portland, having been born of parents who resided in a home on the site of the present entrance to the botanical gardens. This house was afterwards removed when the plot was gazetted as the botanical gardens. Mrs. Lea was educated at Portland under the tuition of the late Mr. John Hill, and at the age of 15 years she entered the Education Department service, her first assignment being at the North Portland School. Successively she taught at Koroit, Corindhap (near Rokewood), Coleraine, Queenscliff and later at the Casterton schools, and proved herself a very kindly and pains-taking teacher, being beloved by all the children in her care. While at Queenscliff two old time wrecks occurred at the Heads, those of the Ganges and the Cheviot. It was at Casterton (where she was resident for about five years) that she met and married her husband, the late Mr. Job Lea, and left the teaching staff. After only about two years of married life her husband died, leaving the widow with two young sons, William and Charles. After an absence of 19 years, Mrs. Lea returned to Portland, and after a sojourn here removed to Condah Swamp in 1897 and opened a small store there. She also conducted the first successful post office at that place, which was afterwards renamed Wallacedale. She resided there for a period of 22 years, later returning to Portland once more in 1919. Here she has resided ever since.
An ardent member of the Methodist Church, Mrs. Lea was also keenly interested in everything pertaining to the welfare of the town and district, and was of a most charitable nature. She was kindly disposed, and made friends easily. Of the two sons, Charles was killed at Gallipoli in 1915. William, the remaining son, resides at Warrnambool, where he holds a responsible position at Nestle's factory. The funeral took place at Casterton on Friday, after a service at the house was conducted by the Rev. Wesley Hobbs, who also read the service at the graveside. The mortuary arrangements were in the hands of Mr. T. C. Jarrett.
